fuel gauge problem

ive got a 76 westy , everything works well except for the fuel gauge. i have bought about 3 gauges (off the samba) and replaced the sending unit in the tank, as well as replacing the little square box that screws into the back of the gauge. what else can i do. how many wires are to be hooked up to the sending unit in the tank, pos and neg or just pos.? i am leaving to go out west in a week and would really like to get this done! thanks so much , i can always count on you guys!

The positive in the tank leads to the fuel gauge on the dash. The negative connects via small wire behind the firewall where the tank is.

You can spline into the system in several places in order to check the continuity or voltage of the devices.
