Sounds like it may have had a very strong vacuum stored in it and that there was a hole in the bottom of the threads that cause the vacuum to be created and that the bolt effectively sealed the hole off which held the vacuum in. By moving the bolt you broke the seal that had been created and air leaked in through the hole. Make sense?

So I've got two 85C thermostats that came with a spare engine. One was not expanded, and I could pull on the cable to get the thermostat to budge slightly and remain compressed. I boiled it and put it in a 200 degree oven and it wouldn't expand. I had cleaned it (it was filthy) and it looked ok. I put a wrench on the long brass nut where the cable is running through, and it expanded as I twisted the nut (at room temp).

Is this thing toast and did twisting that nut ruin it? Anyone know why it would not expand?

A waste of money, they fail in the closed position, usually in a couple of years or less.

I got a type 1 thermostat off thesamba classifieds. It was unfortunately the pre-75 65-70 degree one, but better than nothing.

I couldn't figure out if the cylindrical threaded brass piece was designed to come off. I gripped it in the vice but it slipped with the pressure I was comfortable putting on it to hold, and so I figured it wasn't coming off.

I was able to make my own step stud by sawing off the head of a long tin screw and running a die over it, 1 end is now the 6mm x 1.0 thread, the other is a 4mm x .70 going into the thermostat. It's a little long but it clears the part where the block sticks out when it's hot so all good.

Double checking the germansupply how to, I see that the cylindrical part does actually come off. Oh well. Smile

No, they're all gone. The 111 is all that's left.

This is genuine Volkswagen/Germany. It is discontinued but we still have inventory. Word has it that the tooling was destroyed in a fire, so future availability does not look good.

yep thats the one i'm currently using. its a 65-70 degree thermostat. i'm wondering if you can buy the 021-119-159A Type 4 72.5-79 (85-90C) or the 043-119-159 Type 1 FI 75-up (80-85C)

ratwell's page is awesome for thermostat info: http://www.ratwell.com/technical/Thermostats.html

well i finally got my thermostat all hooked up. its lower 20's in nashville tonight so i took i for a test run. it seemed to fully open in about 15 minutes of normal city driving. that seemed a little quick to me considering how cold it was. i have the 65-70 degree thermostat because i didn't realize there where different temperature thermostats when i ordered mine from bus depot. can u even buy the 80-85 degree thermostat somewhere?

You sure can use a standard bicycle brake,/shift cable with the nub on the end, works good, thicker than stock, longer than stock (and I kept it extra long enough so i could hold on to it)

cheap! free for me, I was lucky and a friend was working at the bike shop that day

it is a flat piece of rubber about the size of dime.

You can buy one here. There are posts on it so I am surprised it didn't come up in a search. Did you do one?

Don't buy a used t-stat. The cost alone is reason enough to wait until aircooled .net gets restocked, go w/ a type1 t-stat and modify the cable. Barry

Ok, most everyone seems to be out of them and they are on back order. Go Westy has them for the type 4 for $51.25 (type 1s are listed $19-24). The guy also said he'd go with the original part over the type 1.

My question is, is there a big difference AND does anyone have one they want to get rid of?
