|
|
I'm restoring a Mango sunroof bus that is a little different. No extra windows (owner special ordered and didn't want them). After using for many years, he parked it and sealed the roof with a glued-down cover. A friend and I took that cover off today and found a Mango-colored sliding roof. It would look very cool with Mango Green on top, just like the day it was sold.
Question: does anyone know of a source for a replacement Mango-colored sliding roof? I think this would look really nice....better than a tan or black roof. Any ideas, anyone?

You are likely going to end up at a custom canvas shop.
Sweet bus, looks very clean. Would you mind posting the M-Codes?
I am wondering why you have a tent pole loop. _________________ Feel My Pain l Sage Ad World |

The original owner had a Westy put in when he bought it. He ordered it as a microbus and went to pick it up in Germany and saw another Westy in the showroom and made a quick decision to have his bus converted.
M-Code and info on plate behind front seat reads:
05 04 0
156 372 139
225 GRGRUEN
There is also the number 225 stamped in ink (or paint) on the bulkhead near the M-Code plate

Hey Pete. Nice to see more photos of that bus. It was nice meeting you at the Red Barn show. I still think you should leave that bus as a camper ather than putting the seats back in. |

I've been able to get a lot of the primer off the original paint and the patina is very nice. Had paint computer matched and put in spray cans for some touch-ups. With some TLC, a few dents straightened out, and some time, this car should be a good looking daily driver around town. When I'm finished, I'll have to find a long board to hang out the top and head to the coast to go surfin'.

Greg, you know that Campingbox interior and silver pole tent you got from me came out of a '59 Mango Std. Sunroof, the guy gave me a couple of photos of the tent setup before parting it _________________ ---

That's the clip for the Westy tent that the Westy factory put in for the original owner when he converted this bus. It's bolted to the bumper. And the clips on the roof on the passenger side are also for the tent. They are also bolted through the roof.
Funny thing, the bumper piece isn't a fancy piece, but I'm told that the Westy parts are tough to come by, even that one.

I might eventually go back to that. But I like originality and the bus was produced as a passenger vehicle, then converted. By the time the original owner sold it to me, a lot of the Westy content was gone. He had replaced the interior with a homemade bed, and some really "interesting" green shag throughout. I've left a panel of the shag on the inside of the luggage decklid/door for memory's sake. But for now, I want to return it to the original bus that it was. Have some fun driving it around....hopefully to OCTO in the fall, and back and forth to the Sierras.
What really makes this one special, is he saved most of his paperwork from the sale and from his travels through Alaska, etc. Even has notes about gas wars 12.9cents/gallon. And some really cool pics of his family out camping with the bus. |

It looks odd, is that schmutz around the top debris from the glued on cover or is it a weld bead? Does this thing have belly pans? If it does its an odd bird, a sunroof standard camper conversion.

That's glue (I like that term "schmutz". You just expanded my vocab) and I already removed a little of it this evening with some laquer thinner. Comes of pretty easy.
Yeah, there are belly pans and window cutouts in the inside. I'm trying to get some more pics out, but computers and I are not the best of friends.

The more I look at it I think it is a ridge from where they glued that cover thingy over the sunroof. It's gotta be a rare dealer add on for the customer. Really nice bus by the looks of the rest of the pictures. Now just slam it and drag the steering box and you'll be hoodin'...

I concour. A nice mango sunroof standard at that. Need a lawn mower though to trim the shag carpeting
Check out the other sunroof that just turned up, a '64 but I think its a kombi, and a walkthru. Nice to see some of these popping up lately. Much cooler than the typical 21 and 23 windows one sees all over the place.

Once you are ready to actually put on the sunroof, you can order the white canvas and then have it sprayed with a fabric paint with the correct color. I recently had this done to my white sunroof to make it match the silver/beige paint. It looks perfect and matches the bus very nicely.
A good restoration shop should be able to do that dying/painting of your top whether vinyl or canvas. _________________ 1965 21 Window
