Beetles no, but ghias yes. Would guess transistion air cleaner that got discontinued due to the new bus/ghia 40HP with snout air cleaner that came out in 1961.

Or possibly industrial engine...

Can anyone provide a picture of an early 1967 air cleaner?

Which side does it sit on (Right I assume).

Does it have a hanger from the engine compartment roof?

Does the paper preheat hose run to the little extra pipe in the rear of the engine or travel towards the front to the heater box attachment?

From Everett's technical pages http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/aug66bus/page29.jpg has hanger, right side mounted, and the preheat tube heads forward.

Finally got some pics of the wingnut air filters. The numbers on them are the same the only difference is the bottoms.

More on the other filter that's only been seen in Australia so far.
No visible numbers or markings on it. The internal filter is a ryco one that butts hard up against each end to seal off the intake. The top is standard bus/ghia that the bottom clips onto.
Perforated at the bottom around the ridge for the dust to fall out, intake for the oil breather pipe too. So I'm guessing 40hp and up, from 60s upwards.

I found this air cleaner recently and had a disagreement with a friend about the application. After research I believe I have a 64 to 67 air cleaner here. Just wanted to add these pics for reference.

Sounds right to me. Look for a date stamp on the outer side of the lower piece.

I am in the middle of rebuilding my September 1963 1500 engine #0302454
it will be installed in my January 1964 deluxe, I like to make sure that every thing is as close to correct in the rebuild so here is my question regarding the preheat tube, as this diagram shows it to be a j tube not a straight? Any input? hugely appreciated

I have this unusual front tin with hole for pre heating on right(passenger)side

I'm almost sure it's from the 40HP engine

With original hole for pre heating
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The bug 40HP had no hole for preheating to the right
Bus had, but as far as I know, it was only during 66-67 on 1500 engines
Also, as far as I know in 1966-1967 there was no bus with 40HP engine
For which air cleaner-pre heating sistem it can be?
