I have this unusual front tin with hole for pre heating on right(passenger)side
I'm almost sure it's from the 40HP engine
With original hole for pre heating
The bug 40HP had no hole for preheating to the right
Bus had, but as far as I know, it was only during 66-67 on 1500 engines
Also, as far as I know in 1966-1967 there was no bus with 40HP engine
For which air cleaner-pre heating sistem it can be? |
If it's a factory hole then it's the ultra rare '67 only front tin. |

By the pressing it does not look 40 HP.
70 CM both 40 HP and 1500/1600 have same dimension width there.
Where they would be different is from just inside the forward exhaust pipes. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

You're right
I did not pay attention to that part
I thought the range between fixing holes was different, like that on rear tin
So this is definitely for 1500 66-67 |

I noticed yesterday that the flap on my single cab's oil bath is always open. Like this...
(Same oil bath, but mine has the breather pipe on the other side of the bowl).
The flap handle isn't tied open. The bob weight is in such a position that it holds the flap open at rest, rather than closed. The hooked arm and bob weight point in the same direction toward the body of the cleaner.
Before I go bending stuff, was there ever a legitimate reason for that, or has it just been messed with by a previous owner? _________________ Andy

Yes, no bendy required, just flex it off that point. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Normally the flap is closed and opens if you hit the throttle hard. Having warm air enter the carb is important for several reasons- it increases the vaporization of the fuel which results in a better running engine without stumble/hesitation, and helps prevent icing of the carb in cool damp climates like yours. You should notice a difference in how it drives once you fix this. There's also a heat riser tube under the carb (which is commonly clogged) to add heat but I think the warm air inlet to the air cleaner is equally or more important that the tube under the carb.
It looks like someone has mangled yours in a previous life. Unmangle it so the balance weight just barely keeps the flap closed, and it should open when you gun it.

Thanks, I should have been clearer. That photo wasn't my air cleaner, it was a picture from the gallery.
Mine is below. The bob weight is parallel with the hook arm, rather than opposing it, so the flap stays open all the time. From the answers though, I'm sure this is screwed up...

Bend the weight toward the end of the snout so it just closes up the flap. Then contact the owner of that first image you posted and see if you can do a trade of air cleaners!! _________________ In Stereo, Where Available!

The upper one looks like a stock rubber connector:
And the lower one, possibly this style, cut to fit?
