I have a '78 bus with a 1700 in it. My first question has to do with it's recent problem running, then I have just a curiosity question. To begin with, I have not had any problems that I'm aware of for the month I have owned this bus. Just this morning though, after driving about a mile, it suddenly and severely lost power. I pulled over, took it out of gear, and let it idle for a moment, which it did fine. As soon as I put it back in gear, let up on the clutch, it wanted to die. When I could it going, I could only maintain about 5mph, dieing every couple of blocks. Any suggestions?
Second question, inside the driver's side door, what is the little switch that sticks out? Any time that door is open, the buzzer attatched to the switch wails incessantly, wheather the key is in the ignition, or not. Thanks for the help. Keep up the forum, it is a wealth of knowledge! |

Start by changing the fuel filter.
It's to remind you that you've left the keys in the ignition and you are on the verge of locking the door with your keys inside. If you really can't stand it, pull the relay from the bottom of the fuse panel. It's usually the rightmost relay and looks like this:

If it has more than two prongs and isn't silver you've pulled the wrong one. |

You probably have a 2.0 liter rather than a 1.7 liter. I'm going to second the advice above from ratwell. Sounds like a clogged fuel filter or a bad fuel pump. If the fuel pump is making excessive noise then this is probably another indication of the same problem. Remove the fuel pump when you remove the filter and try to clean it out a little. Fill it full of diesel or kerosene, shake it, and dump it out. Do this a couple of times then reinstall the pump with a new filter. Good luck. |
