What do you mean by "peg out when current is applied"?

he means the gauge goes all the way to the right when you turn the bus key to run.

the wire between the sender and the gauge has a fault.

or the gauge or sender is wired incorrectly.
i just wired an oil pressure gauge, and i had the wires on the sender backwards (there were two terminals on the sender), and the gauge pegged when i turned the key on. i switched them, and the gauge worked fine after that, so did the dash light. apparently it is important to have the wire for the stock dash light on the proper post on the sender. i would try switching the wires on the sender and see what happens, and would also check the wiring on the back of the gauge.

Just in case this is so, here is the official VDO Cockpit oil-pressure gauge & sender, installation instructions and electrical-circuit wiring diagram:

If you are using a VDO dipole sender that allows both the light and the gauge to work, make sure that the G= gauge and WK= the light.

The ground is the vehicle ground.

This happened to me when I installed my VDO gauge. It was a bad sender unit. It worked a few times then just gave up. Bus Depot exchanged it without incident, but said the failures were "Rare". The replacement sender went in without incident.

When I picked up my VDO CHT gauge, I couldn't get the needle to move at all. Turned out the gauge was faulty and I had it replaced by VDO. Here's the thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=246419&highlight=
