Ordered a nice set of replacement tail lights for it last week and just got them today. Man o man what a whirl wind year so far! Moved the business from San Diego to Licking Missouri the first of the year. Its taken all this time to truly get settled in and to the point where I can start thinking about playing on the toys once again. The juices are bubbling to get back on the Thing where I left off mid last year. It looks like the mission has changed from being a Desert machine to dirt roads, trails, and woods! The 181’s new home!

Put a crank nut, tin and crank in "The Toy." Pretty neat. Will use the crank at shows. Very Happy

swapped out the torn hood rubber seal for new rubber seal. got some road tar off that had been on there from the p.o., put on a new antenna to replace the broken one. Even though i don't plan on putting a permanent radio, the broken one was bothering my OCD. took it for a ride locally as the tourists were all driving around so this weekend is like Amateur night. Still have a clunk in the front end somewhere.

Backstory - had a 009 distributor and never could get rid of the flat spot on acceleration. Bought the Flame Thrower a few years ago since I wanted a SVDA and electronic ignition. I came across the DVDA with a good can about a year ago for a good price and bought it with the intention of keeping it as a spare. Unfortunately I didn't have it with me yesterday. Embarassed
After driving around about 45 minutes yesterday, no issues, it just died while approaching a stop light. Wouldn't restart and I diagnosed no spark. Popped in the DVDA, adjusted the points and timing and ran around for over an hour today with no issues. I swear it starts better than it did previously and runs smoother too.
No more electronic ignition for me. Laughing

I was finally motivated to trace all the mystery wires I bundled up out of the way, it has been that way since I bought the car.

Most went between a pair of door switches in the body and a toggle switch mounted up under the dash on the drive side. I think the toggle was wired in to close the circuit when the doors were off and those switches were open. Quality work with masking tape holding the tap wire on the fuse block and splices together. Whatever they used to do they sure didn't anymore, most were cut or spliced into each-other.

Many of the others (9) went to a switch labeled "Tape/Radio" panel mounted near the headlight switch, none of them went anywhere, just twisted and wrapped around inside the dash. I cut them all off the same length, taped them up and remounted the switch, might come in handy some day.

I have one loose wire left to trace on the wiring diagram, in the green box in the picture. As you can see unless the wires were inside the dash they were all painted orange once upon a time Smile

Went for my 1st drive after getting my newest project back on the road. I found this 73 Thing on eBay in upstate NY of all places. 32k original miles. It cleaned up nicely. I figured a pumpkin patch would be an appropriate first picture...

Finally got the valves adjusted. Cleaned up the valve covers. Got the twin carbs synched, and got to take it for a spin. The new wheels and tires make a world of difference and it runs great! Took the grand-kids with me and they had a ball. My next project will be finding a set of side curtains.

Installed new engine compartment seals. Found a pretty good technique using a painters tool and a paint can opener. Cleaned and straightened the channel before starting
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I started with the bottom of the gasket inserted in the slot all the way around. Sprayed the top of the gasket with silicone spray. Inserted the paint can opener into the upper slot.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

put the painters tool under the paint can opener against the gasket, pulled down on the opener while pushing in with the painters tool. I used 2 hands to do it, I had the camera in the other hand while taking the picture.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Once I got the technique down. it went pretty quick.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Check while you are going along to make sure the bottom of the gasket is still in the channel.

I did the rear seal the same way, a little tougher but still easier than trying to slide it in the channel. At times I had to go back and finish pushing the gasket in the channel, I think it would have been easier with something a about twice the width of the paint can opener.
Another step towards being ready for summer cruising. Very Happy
