I just bought my first 74 vw thing and t=yesterday I went to town on it.
- I sanded the convertible arms down to the metal and sprayed it with black rustoleum rust converter.
- sanded and sprayed the front fender.
- sanded sprayed rust spots on hood and windshield as well as rear floor below the battery (lots of holes there).
- Put the convertible top on.
- sprayed penetrate solution into doors and screw to release them so I could take of the doors. 3 came off so far... one to go.
It was a big day! |

Spent less than an hour "polishing" my vinyl windows. You could hardly see through them, and I'm not a fan of the glass ones I have. So, they are good enough for a driver... far from perfect though... On to the pics...

They were just really hazy... Did not really get rid of any big scratches. There is still some brown damage in spots that it didn't help. Not sure if using a buffer would help. |

Put the top down and enjoyed the ride to and from our club meeting with my son. Gotta love 70 degree temps in November. _________________ 73 Thing (Typ481)

We took a short trip over the Black Range from Silver City to Truth or Consequences New Mexico to hang out at some hot springs. Damn nice weekend.
Emory Pass at the top of the Black Range, two Aussys in there right hand drive Off-Road vehicals on their trek and then some English tourist pulled up in a rental car. Both had to take pictures of us and our Thing. I'm a proud father.

We got 6" of snow last night, and it's not going to get warm for quite a while again
So......as soon as I can clean out enough space in the center of the garage, Hermann's backing in to have his front end worked on

Repaired the emergency brake "tab" on the tunnel. Somehow it got bent down and was no longer engaging the ratchet cam in the handbrake. Now I can hear the distinctive "click, click, click" when I pull up on the handle. _________________ Walküre Restoration Thread: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=737492 |

I did a quick little thing out on the street today at lunch. I ordered some good quality motorcycle mirrors that came in today. Yanked off the stock ones and threw these on.
I think it looks mo' better. Tighter too. It seems like they are more than half the size of the "mongo-sized" stock ones. _________________ "Okay, so there's 6 beers and 5 of us. You know what this means don't you? 4 of you are going to have to leave."

My side cutains are plexiglass sliders for the front but the standard rear ones. I dream of glass though.
Mike, I've got a stock pile of parts that the P.O. gave me. PILES.... I like to keep everything I can. It's the Pack Rat in me, I guess. _________________ "Okay, so there's 6 beers and 5 of us. You know what this means don't you? 4 of you are going to have to leave."

No. I didn't make them. They were on the car when I bought it. I do have most all the old Trim Shop catalogs (I'm telling you, I got PILES from the P.O.) and they were offered way back then, I believe. I get some better pix for you. They are easy to replace if I need to. They have the tendency to vibrate open when driving and they don't lock. _________________ "Okay, so there's 6 beers and 5 of us.
