After a week and a half, my e-brake parts finally made it here from VDub Engineering (thank you Canada Post ), and I got the Thing rolling again. Last night was the first test drive, and it was completely successful. Today I had to bleed out the brake light switch again since it wasn't activating correctly.
Just in time for VW Drag Night 2011! Tomorrow morning will be the trek down to Charleston, then off to Orangeburg for the races on Saturday.
I still need to get my pictures together from this project, plus the tips for anyone interested in trying it.. |

Attended the Pacific Northwest Vintage show with that roving gnome (Sam W.) The night before we were at the BurgerMaster event. I won second place in the 181 class. Greatgazoo won first place.
and the belle of the ball
Kuble wanted to hang with us but was moved to a special place. It won best of show

Mocked out new Auxiliary Fuse and gauge panel. Altered left panel to fit stock location of Emergency switch and brake light. Added three 2 1/16 holes for some VDO gauges. Unfortunately, the symmetry of the holes doesn't satisfy my OCD requirements so I'll do up another panel. This one's good enough for checking clearances. BTW,...clearance between face and defrost hose is 2.5 inches.
Fear not. I'm not altering my original panel. Picked this one up at a swap meet for $10. Included hinges and pad. Extra fuse panel cost another $3
Running a separate positive and ground from the battery to power up radios, amps, fog-lights and anything else I want.

Replaced a "growling" right front outer bearing. Checked and regreased both sides. Front end sounds as smooth a budda now. Discovered missing speedo cable clip. Someone had used some bailing wire instead. Put it on the list of parts to order.
Also adjusted front brakes. DAMN, WHAT a difference!
Discovered 12 out of 16 inspection plugs missing. Ordered 16 to have some spares. _________________ Walküre Restoration Thread: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=737492 |

This weekend I took the engine out. Replaced the oil cooler gaskets then put the engine back in and started driving it again. No more oil leak! _________________ ________

Bitched about the rising cost of VW German wheel bearings when I replaced my front sets.
Yesterday drove the Thing to NAPA to buy two ball joints and a wheel bearing set for my '06 dodge 3500 diesel. WOW!!! $ 486.00. Only one side, other side will have to wait until next month.
I will promise not to bitch about the cost of VW parts again, (at least until the next purchase). _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

I got really busy in the shop today on my Thing. My floor pans came in late yesterday from CIP1 and man those are some cheap crappy pans.
I would not recomend them but i made them work. One side had cuts in it where it was stamped out and i had to fill those in with small slits of metal.
Also on the tunnel side of the pans they are too wide, had to cut of about 3/4 inch to get them fitted. Here's pics...
Flipped my body upside down to fix the bottom of drivers door where pan bolts up.Previous owner did some crappy repait from a wreck i guess.
the bottom piece with nut plates was there so i cut it off straightend and put it back, used a big clamp to pull the panels back together and welded them along the seam.
Put new metal on outside so i have something to weld new rocker panel too.
a lot of trimming but got the pans tack welded...
weled up...
This front bumper bracket on the left i made from scratch on the metal brake.the old one was tore off with the bumper in a wreck.I had to do a lot of work to get the front end back into some shape.
flipping body and raising it back up...
body setting on pan. As soon as some ridges i ordered from the classifieds show up i am going to fix the outside of the bottom of drivers door.
I think tomorrow i will pull the front beam and rebulid it.Got all new parts.
I am going to weld in adjusters into the beam also.Might pull ttrans axle and clean that up too.Slowly but getting somewhere now. |

This is the last weekend i can play with my Thing.I got to start getting two motors going together starting monday for some freinds. So today i lifted the body back up and tore my front end down.I'm putting my 73 Thing body on a 67 Bug pan.I cut the beam and welded in BJ adjusters. Then pressed on new ball Joints.Put on a new steering box.I ran out of time today but need to get the new tie rod ends put on.I am going to re[place the front drums they look pretty thing, so will get all new brake stuff too.
I want to pull the tranny and clean that up, maybe paint the pan with some good chassis paint from Eastwood Co.
