AZ-BUG
I finely got around to mounting my front beam in my car and turning up my rear torsions, now I just need to work on the floor pans and paint.

OK, another update. Got the straps installed to keep the frame horns from cracking...

Made seat mounts (thanks Neanders for the idea) and installed seats (from a 2003 Cavalier)... also added tube from cage to front beam.

and beefed up the front suspension mount... added upper & lower supports as well as diagonals. Still need to buy my Bilsteins for the front.

Engine is back in, and most of the electrical is working, still a few bugs to work out. I am getting close to finishing up, should be done in time to enjoy the cool weather!

Yeah, got 'em off the internet somewhere Very Happy

Please do on the front re-inforce... you can also add a couple of diagonals to the bottom tubes from near the clamp back to the tunnel. Has to be pretty small tubing (at least on the driver's side) because of the master cylinder. A vertical one between the two tubes behind the clamp is also a good idea.

yup, stock tank. You need to keep an eye on the upper tubes coming from the cage, right where they come through the firewall, you also want to make sure you don't lower it because it will interfere with the tie rod (unless of course you get your hands on a tube bender, then it is easy to handle).

Hi, thanks for your comments. I started with a 6 point cage and then added to it. I am using an big & old Lincoln stick welder that a friend lent me. My welds are OK if there are no tricky angles, etc... otherwise I am getting a few ugly welds Embarassed

I got temporary tags for it the other day and am working on getting it to pass emissions. I pass everything except for hydrocarbons at idle. I guess I need to play with the card adjustment some more.

Since you are stick welding, not sure if you knew this or not. But you can bend the stick at any angle you need to in order to get those hard to reach spots.

Car looks good.

Change the oil just before you go in.

Thanks, I actually went through the entire engine while it was out:

new stuff:

points, condenser, cap, rotor, plugs, plug wires, manifold seals, belt, fuel line.

tune-up work:
- adjusted valves
- set timing 7.5 deg static bosch 009
- carb rebuild & adjust
- fresh oil

Got is nice & warm before taking it in...

Any additional ideas are welcome.

Update on emissions testing:

I set the idle speed around 1200 RPM, leaned out the idle mixture as much as possible (until the engine began running rough, & then backed out a little until it ran smooth again). Left timing at 7.5BTDC, warmed it up and took it in... it passed with flying colors. HC limit at idle is 500, car passed at 90 (first time was 2000, second time was 1200... 3rd was the charm). Getting registration tomorrow, so I'll be hitting the roads (hopefully we'll soon dip under 100 F around here!).

I can't wait to take it off-road, will post pics of the maiden voyage.

Are your rear arms just beefed up stock arms? If so how did you get that much lift outa the rear. The car looks great and I hope mine turns out that nice.

I'm working on mine, too. Just picked up an IRS bug pan this weekend that I'm goint to build up this winter for the bug. Right now its a 68 swing axle with 215's all around and a slight lift. Super fun to drive!

Hi! Yup, she's road worthy... been tooling around running errands in it mostly, as well as a few commutes into work. Unfortunately I haven't taken it off-road yet... next weekend I plan to take it out though. I still need to replace the front shocks with something respectable, so I'll be taking it easy with the stockers for now.

I've been fighting a small fuel leak (more like seepage) from the filler hose, right where it connects to the tank. Hopefully I can get it fixed soon, as is makes for stinky left turns (if you've had the problem you know what i mean!).

As for the rear arms, they are just beefed up stockers. I re-indexed the rear, set-up the spring plates so they were just tangent to the bottom bolt hole. It is currently riding on the stop, but takes only about 50 lbs or so to bring it off the stops. I am sure it will droop a bit after my first off-road trip. All rear components are stock, and I have not notched the plates, etc.

Will post photos of the maiden voyage next weekend.
