Just found it.
If you have a 10mm case, and an 8mm cooler, you use the spacer washers.
If you have a 8mm case and a 10mm cooler, you DO NOT use the spacer washers.
The 10mm cooler has the "spacer" built in to the bottom stamping.

Good research, Russ! In all the years I've had beetles, I did not know this and i'll bet some others didn't either. Thanks for taking the trouble.

Being knowledgable is not know everything. It is knowing where to find the information.
I have a bookcase full of VW manuals and old parts catalogs.
I am in the process of scanning them into digital format. 4 CD's full already.
Searchable PDF format.

icekoffee,
How many Quarts of oil did you put in ? You may have the wrong dipstick and over filled the engine with oil. That was the culprit in my situation. To much oil was in the case so it exited throughout the crankshaft pulley due to the wrong readong of oil on the dipstick.

I posted this in another forum, possibly here. All air cooled T-1 dip sticks are the same. 36hp thru to the last. I pulled out some that i had and compared them. 36hp, 40hp and late model with the bigger loop. The marks all line up.

There are different length dipsticks, as you saw in the thread you posted in. I had a short 6" dipstick and should have had a 7". He could have the wrond one in his case.

What enging does that short dipstick fit in?? I have never seen one in over 40 years of working on VW's.
The 3 I posted actually came out of engines i have in the shop, and they were seated in their holes.

I dont know ,but even the picture he posted showed different sized dipsticks. I had that shorter one which was incorrect. 40 years or not , someone made a 6" dipstick that not only myself, but others have seen as well. I dont have an answer to what it fit.

Those ones I posted were all the same length from the ferrel to the end of the stcks and the marks lined up.
Maybe the 6" is some hotrod chrome made in china BS.

The distance you need to measure is from where it seats on the dipstick hole in the case to the high and low marks.

icekoffee: Do you remember how much oil was put in the case? How many quarts ? Someone may have over filled it using your dipstick not knowing that you should only have 2.5 to 3 quarts in it. If not then do yourself a cheap favor and drain the oil and refill it yourself. Oil is not too expensive and it will also single out the problem of being overfilled.
