Hello-
I just ordered some fancy/expensive ceramic hybrid bearings to replace my 50 years old rear axle bearings. Unlike the originals, they're sealed on both sides. I would like to install the rear seals, but I'm concerned that they'll burn up without gear oil sloshing around behind the them. Comments anyone?

Just curious, why re-invent the wheel? The factory bearings last 30-40 sometimes 50 years. I too would be concerned with the lubrication of the seal if you are now using "sealed" bearings. _________________ Bobby

I second Viande....
In the 40 plus years of working on VW's and old Porsches that used the 6306 rear axel bearing, I have only replaced a few. _________________ 2007 Dodge Cummins Diesel 4x4 6spd stick

i use sealed bearings on lowed cars.
heres something i copyed off the interweb about sealed bearings
Note on sealed bearings
Sealed bearings have a tightly sealed cover installed on both sides of the bearing. This cover seals the bearing internals from outside contamination and more importantly the cover seals in the grease or oil.
Any attempt to lubricate a sealed bearing will damage the bearing by deforming and forcing the seals into the balls/rollers. The grease may also be forced out of the bearing case into the motor windings, switches, and connections. The motor may fail because of this.
hope this helps _________________ BUSDROPPINGBEAMNARROWINGSTEERINGBOXRAISING"C"NOTCHINGRUSTREPAIRINGBEETLEDROPPING

When you do this, do you install the seal? If so, does it burn up?
Thanks,

yes i install everything as stock but with a sealed bearing if you ever have to jack your lowerd car up you wont have any oil leaking out of the axle tube _________________ BUSDROPPINGBEAMNARROWINGSTEERINGBOXRAISING"C"NOTCHINGRUSTREPAIRINGBEETLEDROPPING

| sealed bearings are pre-lubed from the factory. Sealed is also kind of a loose term. They keep out grit and stuff, but they usually aren't air tight or water tight unless specifically noted. Oil may seep into the shields and contaminate the factory lube. They may need to be opened up and maintained once in a while...if they are the serviceable type. |
