Hey Peter. I am not sure of the exact date, will know when I send off for the B.C. The VIN# is 1815269. The book I have states that at the end of January, production ended at #1815645. So there is a difference of 376 VW's so more then likely mine was built the last day of January? My last 58, the Diamond Gray one Vin# 1808175, roughly 5 days earlier? |

Right on, thanks for all the help guys. Now I am definately torn on the color. It looks real close to the light bronze too, but I think it's the Diamond Grey. I'll take some pics tonight of the tailights and the glovebox door and I'll post back up. |

I am leaning toward the OG coral red now. Although, Iceland green? is being debated here at the house also. _________________ Like a worm in a cornfield, in one ear and out the other.

I finally got my bug back yesterday afternoon. The number stamped below the plate is: 20750. My son has a 54 oval with semaphores the same color as that last picture posted, would it help you to have his chassis number also?
I will send a picture of my car after I figure out how to do it. |

Well if your Body# is 20750, that makes it a very early 58, like a july 57 body? Now if your one number off, then it would be a January 58 Body like mine!

58 bugger said on page one that my vin and motor numbers make it Aug. of 57. I think they goofed on his chassis number and left one number out. I love these little mysteries, they do them on the Corvette forum also and sometimes they go on for months and months! I'm curios about my son's chassis number, if it's four or five digits. |

58 Buggers Body" is correct, 2312 makes his body an early July 57? Your number makes it a mid July 57 Body. According to the Production # VW finished the month of July 57 with Body#23794. They were cranking out a little over 1200 VW's a day The numbering system for the 58's started right around July 1st? The last Oval ended in June at body# 583692! This forum has taken on a life of its own, I think everybody likes a good mystery

judy's58,
Like Agave said, there is not a number missing from the body stamping on my car, just as there is not one missing from 57dbldoor's. As I've learned from this thread, June 1957 they restarted the body numbering from zero and ended the month on body #9560. July 57 ended at # 23 794. Yours falls toward the latter part of July '58, still a very early '58! And if I've kept it straight, the 3rd oldest to post here?
Thanks for taking the time to check out your numbers!! _________________ Like a worm in a cornfield, in one ear and out the other.

And Agave, I did think that was reed green, I had pm'ed the person who posted that pic, and he told me it was Iceland green. But if thats reed green, then thats one of my top picks for possible colors. I also really like the mango.
Anyhoo.....also brought down the remaining piece of the puzzle today, the OG frame! I will begin cleaning her tomorrow, I sense a whole lotta wire brushing in my near future. _________________ Like a worm in a cornfield, in one ear and out the other.
