I posted about this in General as I didn't see this thread but another poster linked to here … sorry if this one has already been posted
Had never heard of Harry & Tonto and it wasn't too far from the end but the first thing I saw was this old guy hitch-hiking and he got picked up by this bus with a Ragtop ... on top.
Just figured I'd share with the group! |

"My Three Sons" 1971 TV season episode named "Debbie", a college freshman named Debbie (Brooke Bundy) puts a large dent into the upper portion of the left rear fender on her '65 (?) Beetle in the parking lot against the car driven by the Douglas' youngest son Ernie (Barry Livingston). She sweet-talks him and his family to fix the car for free. Vent window post appears to be slightly angled back, along with thin-pillar large side windows to ID the Beetle as a '65. Mr. Douglas (Fred MacMurray) pounds the dent out on his front lawn while middle son Chip (Stanley Livingston) and Uncle Charley (William Demarest) assist. Final shot shows Ernie holding a heat lamp against the freshly painted and remounted fender. Uncle Charley's hand is blue from paint overspray.
Note the "Cal-Look" trimless window rubber, the rear fender gravel guard, and the 10-slot beauty rings. Car was originally painted a light color (L87 Pearl White?) as seen by the front hood hinge and the exposed taillamp space. SoCal car was solid enough to use factory jack.

Douglas family HAD to be accommodating: Steve had stolen Ernie from a neighbor, and had to keep under the radar of the law. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Video "Freeway of Love" (1985) by Aretha Franklin- At least 3 Beetles visible in this quick shot of a Detroit area junkyard. I wish I could view a higher-resolution version to see if the Beetle on the left is an oval or a square-window. |

"It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" (1963) has many VWs either driven by main characters, or in the background.
The original group leaves the roadside parking space in the beginning of the movie. Location is on California Highway 74 up from Palm Desert near Palm Springs. Driving the early '55 Karmann Cabrio is Mickey Rooney, with Buddy Hackett as passenger. Note the fender mirrors, whitewall-effect wheel beauty rings, 3rd brake light, egg tail lamps, and single chrome turn-down exhaust tip.
Sid Caesar at left, getting into his 1962 Plymouth station wagon.
In the final car chase towards the end of the movie, the 3 main American cars turn in front of a VW and Porsche dealer in Long Beach. Research indicates it's Ricketts Motors, 999 Long Beach Blvd. Entire road is one way.
Continuing with the long multi-car chase scene near the end of the movie, this Capri or Fjord Blue Beetle is parked in the background.
There's also a nice Dove Blue ~1960 Type 2 van parked along the road during the Long Beach final car chase. I have a screen shot of that, but can't find it at moment. |

More VWs in "The Gumball Rally" movie (1976). This movie has already been mentioned in this thread.
Here, the brown Rolls-Royce narrowly avoids colliding with a white pickup in a small town. The Rolls drives into a used car lot, comes out unscathed, but creates a chain reaction of collisions and driver panic. Tan pre-'70 Squareback on right.
The pickup smashes into a black 1966 Beetle (note there is a man clinging in the pickup bed), with a white Squareback in background. More VWs in the overhead shot.
A panicked driver backs her green Mustang into the used car showroom. The action implies the car will run into the red late Beetle on display, but you don't see that in the sequence. |

'69 Karmann Ghia Coupe in "Barn Find Hunter", episode 64 from September 2019. The program only showed the exterior. Ghia was among many other varied vintage cars owned by a collector located in Bozeman, Montana.

Twilight Zone: in season 3, episode 13, aired 12/15/61 and often on the holidays as part of the marathon/binge, and titled, "Once Upon a Time", Buster Keaton plays a janitor who used his boss's time helmet to travel from his time of 1890 to the future of 1962. An oval Bug is in the street when he arrives.
