The hood on that one looks more bubbly and the fenders curve back, thinking it is a super ('71 maybe).

from the 1963 film (spoiler alert in title!) 'the man who finally died' - worth a look if you like a simple plot and overly dramatic acting - watch it here https://ok.ru/video/1914172410548
a good start - opening shot with a beetle

Watching the Asscar car race today. I noticed that Ruttlege Wood has a picture of a tintop bus on the wall of his home broadcast studio.
That makes three Nascar associated folks that are ACVW drivers/fans. That I am aware of.
Daniel Suarez.
Bubba Wallace.

Oval window sunroof Beetle in right background of "Leave it to Beaver" TV show, 1963. Episode "Credit Card"- Wally Cleaver (actor Tony Dow, at door) finds out that the battery in his early 1950's Chevy convertible is nearly dead. He gets a push-start from his friends Clarence ("Lumpy", Frank Bank) and Eddie (Ken Osmond, RIP 5/2020). Other cars are Triumph Herald convertibles to the left and right, a Triumph TR2 or TR3; and a black late 50's Corvette. Larger, "snowflake" size taillamps and overrider bumpers would date it to '56 or '57 model year.

Here we have that award winning actor Burt Reynolds and his pal Jerry Reed in the classic blockbuster of 1976 “Gator” also starring Lauren Hutton. It had been many years since I’ve seen it and forgot the Vw repair shop. Movie is shot on location along Georgia coast. Someone might even remember this shop. But I like the girl on the swing and the fool driving a red Ford. If you like Burt you’ll like this sequel to his first moonshine good ol boy movie “White Lightning”

1973 Super Beetle in TV show "Monk" (2005). Season 3, episode 13. An environmental activist drove the SB to a rural site to meet a contractor. The contractor kills the activist, puts him inside the car, and drives the car into his dump truck.

The contractor drives onto a highway and raises the dump bed so that the SB rolls out. Police department consulting private detective Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) is riding in a car on the highway and comes to a traffic jam caused by the SB.

Note that the front fenders have the triangular cutouts for the '74 style absorber bumper inserts. Crude patch on passenger side pan. No engine in the wreck scenes; there is a plate covering that space. Bald tires. IMDB lists the "Highway" as the decommissioned Templin Highway (aka Golden State Hwy) which is just west of I-5 north of Castaic, California that ends at Pyramid Lake.

Yep, I recognize the "old route 99" which roughly parallels the present day I-5.
http://www.gbcnet.com/ushighways/US99/US99f_contents.html

Since it ends at Pyramid Lake now, it's easy to arrange for its closure south of there, making it popular for filming.

99 continues now but only roughly for Bakersfield northward, the southern sections being replaced/bypassed by Interstate 5.

Older still is the original "Ridge Route" that was instrumental in avoiding the "two California" situation by uniting commerce and vacationing, but that'a another story...

Fascinating, thanks for posting that, I've often wondered what those roads were like before they became "super highways". I prefer 99 over I-5 whenever possible, the run down old gas stations, restaurants and motels are much more interesting, as well as the roadside diversions and the Mexican truck stops, I don't mind a couple hours extra to make the drive more interesting and leisurely. Same movie. Rush, 2013. Ron Howard's movie about the conflict between Formula 1 drivers Nicki Lauda and James Hunt in the mid 70's.
