Green early '60's Beetle in new movie "Ford v Ferrari". I just saw the movie, but you can also see the car in the background in this shot from the movie trailer. It's seen behind actor Christian Bale (playing Ken Miles) in the Hi-Ho grocery store parking lot. Euro blade bumper, seemingly wide rear track, lowered, and what could be polished/chromed Empi 5-spoke rims. A few years too soon. There's also a black oval window Beetle in the background of another scene, parked along the street.

Adam-12 TV show "Truant" (season 4, episode 7, 1971) Ofrs Malloy and Reed (actors Martin Milner, Kent McCord) spot 2 boys in a residential neighborhood during the weekday whom they suspect are cutting from school. Just before they stop the boys, Reed spots a red '69 Beetle parked at the curb, with its rear abnormally high- there is no engine. They call in the license plate, which was recently reported stolen. Malloy comments "the interior was picked clean". They see scrape marks on the ground leading up the driveway to the house garage. Not easy to see here, but the VOLKSWAGEN engine lid logo was taped over.

Just as Ofr. Malloy is about to knock on the garage door, it swings open, and a rail buggy makes a run for the street. It gets blocked by another patrol car. Has a few inches of toe-in. Confused

I remember that episode. The one knew the year because "the tail lights are bigger in 68."
Cool buggie. I wonder what make?

I captured about 30 seconds of it as they pull up, and thought, "Wait a minute, that appears perfectly normal--oil spots under an old Bug... Why on earth did they think that was suspicious?!"

With IRS it's at least a '69. The '70 would have had side reflectors and decklid slots, so I vote '69.

In that same episode, as they pull out of the station parking lot, you can count at least 8 VWs, maybe more. Something like half of all non-cop cars in the lot!
They are easier to identify in the video, but I just merged a couple of screen captures for this pic.

Yes, I agree, it is a 69. However the point I was making was that to a non VW lover the biggest change (on the seamly never changing bug) to a trained observer would be the larger tail lights in 1968 with the back up light incorporated into the lens.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!

ADAM-12 update: I count 11 in this one shot of the station parking lot!

It was a different episode, but the cars are nearly identical to the ones posted above, same stalls even, just a few additions. Clearly they filmed a bunch of scenes to re-use in later episodes.

I saw an air Cooled VW club in a steam train video. It was at Christmas time. Oregon Rail Heritage Center. Santa in a red bug, tree on top of another bug, bus with a wreath, blue bug and a Ghia.
Anyone know who they are?
