Long Way Up, 2019.
Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman ride prototype electric Harley Davidson motorcycles from the bottom of Argentina to Los Angeles.
Here in Bolivia they see a father and son driving there bug on the highway.
He then talks a little bit about why they (VWs) are so much a part of his life.
Ewan talks about growing up with bugs in his family and taking many family vacations from Scotland to France in a Bug.
And his 54 bug before being converted to electric.

In the TV series "According to Jim", the kids have a ride-in yellow VW Convertible toy in the yard. Could possibly be a "new beetle" though. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. The '71 now has the 1835 engine, swapped from the '70. Second owner of each. 1988 Mazda B2200 truck, 1998 Frontier, 2014 Yukon, 2004 Frontier King Cab. All manual transmission except for the Yukon. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=335294 http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=335297 |

From Oct. 2020:

Today on Cozi TV, Munsters episode "Herman, the Tire Kicker", Herman looks to buy a used vehicle for Marilyn.
Herman looks for the engine in the front, is shown the rear and says that a little old lady left her sewing machine in the trunk.
Herman felt the VW was too light for him. Salesman is Frank Gorshin.
|
This episode came up again this past week, and I got some more shots. "Wanting to check the carburetor"...
The "sewing machine", aka 36 hp engine. IMCDb lists the Beetle as a '53, yet we see many details on the engine that are from later 36ers- 1960 36 hp fan shroud with the round rubber spark plug wire holders, the later style oil filler cap, small nut on the generator pulley.
Herman lifts the Beetle per Cusser's photo above and sets it down again, which explains the positive camber on the rear wheels in this last shot. The shady used car salesman Fair Deal Dan talks Herman into buying the '51 Chevy Styleline Convertible in the foreground. |

Good one with "Live and Let Die", Rene. I got a shot of same location from a fraction of a second earlier, where the yellow Checker Marathon cab (with James Bond- Roger Moore inside) is a few car lengths back.
Continuing with this movie, here are a few more VWs:
Bond is in the same cab (not seen in this shot), following the brown Cadillac in New York City. '68/69 Beetle-
1 or 2 seconds later, 2 Ghias are across the street (arrows). "W 111 St" runs 1 way east to west. The large 2-direction street is Broadway, with the Ghias facing southbound. This location is a few blocks south of Columbia University.
Now Bond is still in the same cab and passes by this Ivory early Bay parked. Cad stops at the Fillet of Soul club at the left corner. IMDB shows the location as East 94th St and 2nd Avenue in Manhattan. Map shows that E 94th has the one-way traffic heading eastward. |

TV show "Charlie's Angels" from the late 1970's was filmed in Los Angeles, so there is a large potential to see an aircooled VW in the background. In episode "Angel Blues" (season 2, episode 19, 1978) there are a lot of them-
1. Early Kombi with wide wheels (Jackmans?), rear fender flares, engine air scoop, roof vent, and no rear bumper:
2. Red later Bay Window deluxe bus:
3. High-roof late Camper:
4. Ravenna Green '73 Super Beetle Karmann Cabriolet:
5. Blue Squareback at curb:
6. Bahama Blue metallic '77 Standard due to what appear to be the sport wheels:
7.In the same parking lot as #6, looking across the street there's a late Type 3 (Squareback?) and a Beetle driving by:
8. '68/'69 Beetle with silver Scirocco:
9. Pale yellow 411 Wagon :
Angel Kelly Garrett (Jaclyn Smith) is in her yellow Mustang II coupe (IMDB lists the road as Pico Blvd) and passes by:
10. Yellow '68- '70 Beetle Karmann Cabrio, and late deluxe Bay Window bus:
11. Dark blue '68/'69 Beetle and turquoise early 60's Beetle:
12. White Squareback parked alongside shop:
13. Finally, a beige early Fastback seen behind the phone booth with lovely Angel Kris Munroe (Cheryl Ladd). A second later it pulls away from the intersection so you can see the rear of the car and confirm it's a Fasty. |

Actually, decent amount of footage of the old VW driving; and since Janet Leigh (her character, wife of Tony Curtis then) truly owned a VW, it would've been near new, and it was new-appearing in the film (someone had a nice restore). |
In that picture it looks one color, in this one:
http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_597216-Volkswagen-De-Luxe-Sedan-Typ-1-1958.html
It looks another. I was wondering if anyone could identify the color of the second. I think the first picture, might be white or offwhite in a flat, so it didn't reflect the camera. I just saw that movie a couple weeks ago, and been wondering since, because it reminds me of the GM color pewter. |
Maybe Diamond Grey?

More Kuebelwagens- action movie "A Bridge too Far" (1977) depicting WWII, taking place in The Netherlands. Head-on shot of the Kuebel on the bridge looks like a good replica.
This Kuebel has a '68 and later 4-bolt spare rim (cooling holes' shape) with a domed hubcap .
The rear of a 3rd Kuebel at far left.
