This commercial had a big influence on me and my love for VWs. I was 14 at the time. _________________ Prosit!

Many Beetles in the movie "The Mechanic" (1972), filmed in the Los Angeles, California area. Veteran assassin (aka hit man, mechanic) Arthur Bishop (Charles Bronson) teaches Steve McKenna (Jan-Michael Vincent) the skills of his profession. In the opening credits, an anthracite early 60's Beetle drives past behind Bishop as he locks his car.
As he walks to his dive hotel room for observing his target, there is an early 1960's Squareback in the parking lot (Photo in the Type 3 "movies" thread), 3 Beetles in the lot including a '65-'66 with flared fenders and wide tires; and a yellow '71 Std. beetle drives past.
McKenna follows his first target, one of the trio of motorcyclists on the Los Angeles, California area freeway. 2 Beetles are on the right. In distant background is an open grey/silver Porsche 356.
Next, Bishop instructs McKenna to rent a Beetle so that they can follow one of the targets unobtrusively. It's a '67.
They go to a plating company, and a beige '68/'69 Beetle drives past.
Finally, McKenna's target escapes per motorcycle. There's a '63 (first year of larger rear window) Karmann Cabriolet parked in background. |

Can't believe no one has mentioned "Bullitt", with Steve McQueen....during the famous "chase" scene, there is a Beetle, a '66 or later, (movie was made in '69, I think), which shows up repeatedly, either being passed on the left, parked on the street, etc. The funny part, or the part which bothers the detail-freaks, is that the same beetle keeps gettin' in their way, as though it is faster than these two muscle cars, careening around San Francisco at 60-80 mph. Next time you watch the film, you will notice dozens of VW's (and 356 Porsches), including buses, ghias, and Type III's. Actually, the same is true for any tv show or film made on the west coast in the late 60's, early 70's. This was the "hay day" for VW, especially on the west coast. |
Over kill VW's

More 356 love from Bullitt.

I have screen shots of approx. 30 VWs from the "Bullitt" movie's car chase sequence! Was thinking about creating a dedicated thread here to show them. |

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. 2002. About the life of Chuck Barris. Think Gong Show not custom automobiles.
Single cab hauling goats. I think it had smooth gates.

I finally got around to seeing Jojo Rabbit recently. I spotted this in the background. Too blurred to see any detail, unfortunately.
From the tyre on the roof I think this is probably the same car.

A couple more photos. Yes, I agree it is the same car.

TV show "Adam-12" with Los Angeles Police Officers Pete Malloy and Jim Reed (Martin Milner, Kent McCord). In the episode "Roll call" (1974, season 7, episode 4) they find a LAPD motorcycle officer who is dealing with a hostage situation. The location is an apartment basement garage. Malloy works his way around behind a '71-'73 Super Beetle,
then he and the first Ofcr disarm the hostage behind a '65 Beetle.
The final shot of the segment shows 2 Beetles on the road at that location.
IMDB shows the location as Laurel Canyon Blvd in Sherman Oaks, at the south end of the San Fernando Valley. |

The Photographer of Mauthausen, 2018. Takes place during WW2 at Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp. The production couldn't afford a period car. After all a bug is a bug.

^ ^ More European WW2-era:
Two Kuebelwagen in 1958 WW2 movie "The Young Lions".
Yes, that's Marlon Brando to the right of the Schwimmwagen, as a German Lieutenant.
Another character well known "from WW2" is also in this movie in a small part- John Banner, playing a town mayor; best known in the late 1960's as Sargeant Schultz in "Hogan's Heroes".
Unexpected WW2-era sighting, in the late 1960's American TV show "Hogan's Heroes" which is set in early 1940's Germany at the Stalag 13 PoW camp. Episode named "Klink's Masterpiece" (season 6 ep. 3, 1970) has Colonel Klink traveling to Berlin to display some of his amateur paintings. As his period-correct Mercedes staff car approaches the art gallery, it passes 2 Beetles-
Both are clearly '58+ large-windows. Good that this segment was filmed at night, or the decades-later VWs would be too noticeable. |

TV show Counting Cars 2018 season 8 episode 9 "Low Riding Lincoln" has the Las Vegas, Nevada based customizing and fabrication shop guys Ryan and Horny Mike (due to his hair style) visiting a woman who owns an original, unrestored '69 Mustang Mach 1. As she opens the garage door, there's a Sea Blue '66 Beetle to the left. It has the fiberglass "Bug Hatch" rear window insert with split window. The Beetle is her daily driver.
