Dune buggy gets smashed by the red semi driven by character Lincoln Hawk (Sylvester Stallone) in the movie "Over the Top" (1987) as the antagonists catch up with him in their white Dodge pickup truck.
Stallone gets out along with his son. Buggy appears to be an El Lobo.
VW-powered trike from one of the biker gang, behind the leader Cholla (John Quade) in the Clint Eastwood movie "Any which way you can" (1980).
Here's an unusual one. 1963 movie "Love is a Ball", set in the French Riviera. Main character Glenn Ford is the passenger in Hope Lange's red 1959 Maserati 3500 GT Spyder who drives it enthusiastically, almost recklessly around Monte Carlo. Ford has enough, reaches over with his leg to step on the brake pedal- but those are Beetle pedals from '58 thru '63! You only see this for a second but the VW logos are clearly visible on the pedal pads. |

Red '67 Beetle driving in background during opening credits in movie "The Out of Towners" (1970) filmed in Manhattan, New York City. Main character played by Jack Lemmon in center.
Savannah Beige '67 Beetle, YouTube video "People on the GO" from Ontario, Canada 1973.
Blue late Beetle in traffic, end of Chuck Norris movie "Lone Wolf McQuade", 1983. Norris' character, Texas Ranger McQuade, is driving off in his cream-colored Dodge Ramcharger in the center background. Beetle looks like it has Mexican production-style steel wheels, likely driving from Mexico which is the border city of El Paso.

I was watching "Anchorman", and when Burgandy throws a burrito at the biker on the bridge and stops, a red Beetle drives by. Also, in "Every which way but loose", besides the ones I mentioned, there is a cool blue customized Beetle with Cragar type rims. It can only be seen for a second, when the Black widows get beat up by the truckers at the diner. It's parked on the street, and the other bug there has a cool rack on it I lost my remote, so I couldn't pause it to get a better look |
From my gallery- here's the customized Beetle. Rear quarter air vents, and side reflectors in the "tombstone" taillamps would make it a '71 or '72 Standard.
And another Beetle in the diner parking lot, probably the one mentioned above with the "rack on it". In another shot you can see the snowflake taillamps, dating this one to '58 thru '61. Can't see the door handles well enough to determine if "ice pick" thru '59 or "full handle" style as of '60.
IMDB lists the diner as the Olympic Coffee Shop in Sylmar (San Fernando Valley), California. |

I'll continue with more photos from my gallery: As the 2nd Kuebelwagen collides with the WW1-era tank driven by the Nazi unit.
German soldier/driver reaching out to the door handle-
Dual-tip muffler, 4-bolt wheels with brake vent holes?!
Mangled and unusually flat floor on the Kuebel without the usual lateral reinforcing ribs.
The Nazi unit commander Vogel (Michael Byrne) inside the tank orders the tank team to blow the Kuebel off with a cannon fire. Note how a large flat piece of metal flies off the bottom of the Kuebel. IMDB mentions that a Citroen 2CV chassis was used as basis for this Kuebel; seeing the exposed frame rails that were covered up by the flat piece of metal to mimic the Kuebel's flat chassis makes this feasible.
A cable is seen behind the Kuebel as it lands; likely part of the special effects setup.
Finally, the tank drives over and crushes the Kuebel. Wide-5 wheels on "this one". |

Kuebelwagens in German TV movie "Operation Valkyrie" (2004), not to be confused with the cinema movie "Valkyrie" starring Tom Cruise from 2008. Fact-based movie about a group of WW2 German military high command officers plotting an assassination against Adolf Hitler in 1944. One of the leaders of the conspiracy, Claus Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg (Sebastian Koch), goes to a meeting with the Fuehrer at the eastern HQ "Wolf's Lair" near Rastenburg, East Prussia (now northeastern Poland) in charge of placing the explosive.
A Kuebel is parked at the airport hangar, though not driven in this scene. The large convertible staff car at right is a Horch 850.
von Stauffenberg is driven to the Wolf's Lair perimeter in the Horch, then gets into a Kuebel for the final drive to the buildings.
At the facility, with 2 different Kuebels seen.
von Stauffenberg standing at right:
After the assassination explosion in the bunker, 2 Kuebels rush to the scene-
von Stauffenberg and his aide manage to drive away from the facility in the Horch, and fly back to HQ in Berlin:

from the film 'one, two, three' starring james cagney. nearly missed this gem as I'm not a fan of his but it's classic laughs all the way with the help of supporting cast (in particular hanns lothar) and billy wilder script/direction. set in west berlin 1961 pre-wall.

More occasional Type 4 sightings:
Red early 411 Sedan parked, Jacques Tati movie "Trafic" 1971. Likely the same 411 from this movie which I posted this past January. Tati is the man under the umbrella.
Beige 411 Sedan driving past as woman attempts parallel parking in the instructor's silver VW Golf, German movie "Der Fuehrerschein" (the driver's license) 1979.
Silver '71/'72 411 Wagon on street, movie "A Woman Under the Influence" (1974) filmed in Hollywood, California. ALLRED license plate frame from the Los Angeles area VW dealer in Glendale. Main character Gena Rowlands here. |
