Earliest reference to the Kuebelwagen in the 1962 epic WW2 D-Day movie "The Longest Day" is from 2007:

I doubt that Speilberg thinks in terms of the historical value of vehicles.
That's why I tell people to be very careful in renting their VWs to the movie industry. They think nothing of punching a hole through the sheet metal with a hammer if they have to run a wire or something. Of course, they're there with a checkbook to pay for the damage but it's still your problem to repair it.
That being said, I watched the destruction (by rolling on its side and fire) of a Kubel in "The Longest Day". It was either the real thing or a great replica. The internal guage pod and placards were present. |
Photos: German major Werner Pluskat is driving a Kuebel on a country road, where it gets strafed by a low-flying plane and runs into hedges. |

Kuebelwagen in various movies:
Parked in 1950's city in German movie "Liebe auf krummen Beinen" 1959 (transl. love on crooked legs). Small car in right foreground is Goggomobil Sedan.
Blue/grey Kuebel parked in courtyard of HQ being attacked, "War Devils" 1972.
Parked in front of castle which is under air attack, "Mosquito Squadron" 1969. |

Many Kuebels usually seen in the American TV show "The Rat Patrol" from 1966 thru 1968, showing missions of an small Allied 2-Jeep commando team making long-range patrols in the North African desert. The German army unit leader is Hauptmann Dietrich, played by Hans Gudegast (later changed his name to Eric Braeden; sitting up in the 2nd photo).

Modern Marvels (old rerun) covered James Bond Movie Tech, and discussed gyrocopters.
I think I recognize the engine on this one!: |

Good one, KT. I remember the reference to VW-powered gyrocopters either in the VW of America publication "Small World" or the VW-heavy issue of the late 1960's issue "Sports Car Graphic" (with the Empi Inch Pincher on the cover) where it was usually a Bensen Gyrocopter. Specifically their B-8V model. So I looked up the segment on the gyrocopter in the Bond movie "You only live twice" from 1967. In the sequence where Q's men bring in the large suitcases to the garage in Japan and open them to assemble "Little Nellie", you can see the 4-cyl. aircooled engine packed away. It's not a VW engine due to 4 separate cylinder heads. You can also see the engine in place during one of the quick still shots of the copter assembly. IMDB trivia lists that the gyrocopter was a Wallis WA-116 Agile which was flown in the movie by its inventor, Wing Commander Ken Wallis. Wikipedia lists Nellie's engine as a Wallis-McCullough 4318A. |

White early '60's Cabrio in San Francisco city street, movie "Star Trek IV- The Voyage Home" (1986). Spock and Capt. Kirk in foreground.
Many VWs seen and posted here already in "Dirty Harry" but not this one, so I'll continue the Karmann Beetle Cabrio theme in this post with this one from the 1971 movie. Police inspector Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood) sitting at the diner. Possibly a '71 Super Beetle?
Yellow '73+ Super on street, TV show "Barnaby Jones" S8E2 part 1 "Nightmare in Hawaii" with Jones (Buddy Ebson) crossing the street. |

Nice variety of VWs on a Southern California freeway. I posted this photo in the Ghia Forum "silver screen" thread due to the white lowlight Ghia Coupe in the center. Movie "Divorce American Style" (1967). |

Apologies if this has been posted here already, but from Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, Season 2, Episode 23, during one of those quick cut so fast that you almost miss it segments:

Yellow '71 Karmann Beetle Cabrio driven by Christie Love, main character in TV show "Get Christie Love!" (1974) played by attractive African-American actress Teresa Graves.
She drives off in the evening in a residential area and is in a collision with a hit and run driver-
She's shaken up but mostly unhurt. |

I searched this whole thread and can't believe I found no mention of 1987 punk rock adventure "Dudes." The whole first 2/3 of the movie revolves around three New York punk rockers driving a VW to California--before one gets killed and the car gets trashed. It's a bizarre film, but a must for any VW fan.

"Don't Make Waves", 1967 attempt at screwball comedy as a grown-up beach movie, starring Tony Curtis, Claudia Cardinale, Sharon Tate.
Tony's red VW Beetle is in the titles in cartoon form, then in first scene is rolls down a hill despite Tony's tries to stop it, then down a cliff before overturning; then Claudia's lit match catches it on fire.
