Well I'm working on getting my 67 back on the road after a long stint in the garage (stored while I was in school). I've been working on the wiring harness in the engine compartment and adding a junction block. As I was pulling extremely old electrical tape off of the harness I found a surprise.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Now I've owned this car for 8 years, and I've seen the lump in the harness before. I never did try and figure out what it was, and figured it was someones poor attempt at a wiring repair. After pulling the tape off, low and behold I find a key to the car! Seems the previous owner (an old barber in my hometown) taped a key to the harness to prevent himself from getting locked out.

Ever find anything unusual or unexpected in your VW?

I found my missing driver's side door handle to my '67 bug under the back rest of the back seat. Why was it back there.......I have no idea. I almost went and spent $97 for another one, but I found it! Very Happy Weird!

While cleaning the turn signal assemblies I found a house door key most likely the P.O. stashed it there.

I found a pair of scissors, an 8mm wrench and one wiring cover nut down in the bottom of the drivers side "A" pillar when replacing my windshield defrost hoses.

First time I ever took the engine out I found that one side of the clutch fork had broken and been repaired with a coat hanger welding job.

This is a GREAT thread!

While pulling my car apart, I found all kinds of cassette tapes down in the void in the trunk where the defrost tubes come up. I also found OLD craftsman tools, and ballpoint pens. I am sure there were some other things, but they must not have been too impressive.

When I was 18 I bought a used '86 mustang GT convertable. While cleaning out the trunk, underneith the spare tire was a 1 gallon ziplok bag with this white crystalized powder! The girls family I bought it from said the girl had been in trouble with drugs. Man when I found that, I FREAKED OUT. I did not need to be caught with that junk and ruin my future. It was trash day and the trash guys were coming down the street in their truck. I just put it in the can and hoped noone would find it. I dont know what it was, but I am pretty sure I threw away THOUSANDS of dollars worth of it... What ever it was! Shocked

The PO who owned my 64 bug toured Europe for 7 years then South America for 2 in the bug camping all the way so I knew he had a stash somewhere. I tore the car apart and found an envelope taped under the drivers tar board with $300 in it. Also found a factory german spare parts kit he purchased in Germany in 65 - still had the sales receipt . . .

I just found a 4 foot long snake skin inside the fan shroud on a 1600 dual port motor. It's been sitting a while. The mice had also moved in and the tops of the cylinders were packed with seed shells and torn up upholstery. Good thing I pulled the fan shroud, this one would have been a real hot rod!

We were building a Pinto Race car a few years back and in the trunk under the carpet and sound deadener we found a bunch of polaroid photos of what we presume to be the previous owner having sex. Man was that some UGLY people!

I once bought a 67 and when I pulled up the carpet I found a solid floor.

I was very happy.
