i just aquired a 98 cherokee classic, 2wd 4.0liter
nice truck only thing wrong besides a leaky rear main( no biggie)
is im driving myself nuts trying to figure out my speedometer.
it has a aw4 transmission with the 2 magnetic transmission speed sensors.
anyway here is my issue.
the vehicle speed sensor isnt working ( the one with the gear drive )
so i replaced it. then it still doesnt work so i check the gear drive,
and sure enough the gear is chewed to completely round. i replace it with a new gear drectly from the dealer, re-install the housing w/ new gear attached and clock it properly ( there are 4 positions )
and still no go... any suiggestions? _________________ Brian

as a former jeep owner(2 cj-7 and a grand cherokee) i can say i hope you have better luck with it than i did the grand cherokee.in the 2 years i owned mine i replaced the alternator, fuel pump, transmission, transfer case, front and rear drive shafts, brakes(all but the master cylinder),computer,radiator,radio-it died, waterpump, cat.converter, and was needing another trans when i gave up.and it was a low mile, one owner jeep.some people say my car will pass everything but a gas station, that one would not pass the part store!!!! |

Go here and down load the correct manual for your XJ....
http://www.greatlakesxj.com/tech.html
Clean the engine top and bottom so you can narrow down the leak. The valve cover AND the oil filter connection will look just like a rear main leak. They also hate Fram oil filters, so don't use one.
On my MJ, the leaking main was really a leaking valve cover. Get a new cork gasket from the dealer and install in a thin coat of Hylomar. I use blue locktite on the valve cover bolts. |

ive had a cherokee before, it wasnt bad. i love the 4.0 motor.
they dont have the book for my year so i got the 97 and 99
i have a service manual specific to my transmission, but it doesnt talk much about the vehicle speed sensor ( gear drive) only the tranny speed sensors( magnetic things) _________________ Brian

I think they're decent trucks if maintained. But to me looks are appealing, and I prefer not to drive a "big box" around. _________________ oo9less since 2007

I have a bunch of jeeps. Haven't messed with the speedo on my 2001 Cherokee Sport. So I can't help you there. But if you plan on keeping it for a while I highly recommend having the transmission, transfercase and differentials flushed and then filled with a quality synthetic.
People have a tendancy to overlook these maintenance items and they are costly to repair if they go out.

X2 on what COFBack says. IIRC, your Jeep transmission is a Chrysler automatic, and they are picky about what fluid to use. If the book calls for ATF3, flush it and upgrade to ATF4+. Dextron will tear up one of those transmissions in a heartbeat. _________________ West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943) |

im well aware of the tranny issues thanks guys for the headsup though..
i grew up round cars and know anything dogde/chrysler past about 90 or so needs to have the tranny meticulously watched.
i just got rid of a dakota i had.
also had an 88 cherokee a few years back that was a good jeep, minus the time my fusible link burnt over night while sitting ?!?! ( had me puzzled ) _________________ Brian

Real Jeeps have flat sides.
I have owned a 95 Cherokee Sport. Put almost 200K miles on it with no major problems, except when the fuel pump died while car shopping. That is where it was traded.
My son owns a 91 or 92 Cherokee.
That is the way Jeeps should be driven. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

Oh yeah, my '91 Cherokee has been slowly made new again through the yearly replacement of "stuff'.
Of course, its a winter beater, to save the Bus ...
Leaks oil, rusty as all hell, ABS quit (one year only parts NLA), stinks inside from some unknown leak, headliner is falling down, 3 window motors do not work below 25 degrees, as does the funky IR- based keyless entry, and the windshield just cracked all along the front when I ran the defroster. BUT, parts are cheap. Oh well, just another day in Rustbelt, USA.
And it never met a gas station it didn't like! |
