Out of the Ashes (2003)
Made-for-television movie that was released by Showtime. It is a dramatization of the life of Holocaust concentration camp survivor Gisella Perl and is based on her book I Was a Doctor in Auschwitz.

The medical examiner on the reboot Hawaii Five-0, Max, drove a Thing in the first season with a "WARP 9" license plate. At some point, he got a Chevy -- an obvious plug for the main sponsor. Since the Chevy didn't fit his quirky nature, he just appears where he is needed (which come to think of it, is somewhat Star Trekkish). _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

I rented the movie "The Nice Guys" staring Russel Crowe and Ryan Gosling. Set in 1977, Los Angeles, I figured there would be a VW or two in the background shots. In one scene Russel Crowe meets a young girl in a 74 Thing. I would argue it is not period correct because it would be hard to believe that it would be painted just three years after delivery.

I saw The Falcon and the Snowman (1985) over the weekend. This is an interesting vehicle. Maybe an early car with RGBs but it later has a Fiberjet hardtop (possibly) on it. Large US Spec front turn signals with the early European rear lights. The exterior was painted blue poorly (see the overspray on the rear bumper), but the interior is yellow. Bug peashooter exhaust.

Haven't seen the movie but it's either a 182 Trekker or the image is reversed.

"Capricorn One" (1977) segment of investigative journalist Robert Caulfield (Elliott Gould) trying to control his blue '65 Ford Mustang, filmed in Long Beach, California. Caulfield has been pursuing clues that a 3-man space mission to Mars has been called off moments before launch. His Mustang was tampered with to disable the brakes, ignition and throttle. As the car picks up speed, he manages to avoid traffic. Many VWs are in background. |

"Sudden Impact" (1983), a Yellow Thing is parked across the street from the diner where San Francisco police inspector Harry Callahan (Cling Eastwood) is about to get his coffee. It will be loaded with sugar by the waitress who uses it to signal Callahan that something's wrong inside- the group of robber thugs.

Not actually a movie but 2 different Super Bowl commercials with Things in them. The longer one was for Taco Bell where the Thing was featured throughout. _________________ "Someday the world is gonna be populated by nothing but Volkswagens'" Corporal Klairvoy |

With relatively few posts of Things in movies- 2 pages in 14 years- I'll sneak in a few from TV shows just to keep this dedicated thread going.
Yellow Thing about to be stopped from the rear by the flying superhero in "Shazam", mid 1970's. I was in high school at the time but don't remember this show at all...
Its driver:
"Charlie's Angels" season 2 episode 1 named "Angels in Paradise" (1977). IMDB lists the filming location as Honolulu on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. The Los Angeles, California based investigator team has an assignment in Honolulu, and drive a Thing. Sabrina Duncan (Kate Jackson) is driving, Kris Munroe (Cheryl Ladd) front passenger, with Kelly Garrett (Jaclyn Smith) and John Bosley (David Doyle) in the back seat. |
