Mark,

Yeah I've been to Garlit's in the past. great museum and at the time his ~80s yrold mom ran the old style gift shop register..
a few VW items in there, near zero milage ghia and tech ed cutaway engine & trans models. and some of the jet powered tank engines are simply awesome.

I'll keep your shop & the Garlit's in mind for some of our participants.
we're staying in Manatee Springs s.p near Chiefland then down the coast to Fort DeSoto.

and look out for you & your VWs while in FL .

3 months and GOING Cool

Yes the excitement, anticipation and tension is building … as well are our travel engines…. With much less then 3months to go..

What our next step for the Sunshine Skyway VW Treffen 2010 is are Tour Shirts.

We’re working with the T-shirt vendor for our annual show (Holy Shirt!) who are a great group of people and who do small runs as well as large.

I’m looking at having “Tour Shirts” made by PRE-ORDER, in 2 colors and most sizes (specify)
(colors are TBD, but will be lighter shades so we can wear them during the trip in the heat & beach and appeal to both our masculine & feminine sides.)

Pricing is looking at about $12/shirt +($2) 2/3XL (maybe $10 for small kids sizes)

Since this whole trip is a grassroots funding, I can only take Pre-orders, For those not local, contact me about Paypal payments.
Soo this is time to think about IF & HOW MANY you would want. We need to hit (25) to get this pricing, but with my 2 & Michelle’s (2) it’ll all add up quickly.
One for each of the crew? We’ll check into Kids sizes as well.
2 for you and 1 for the rest any number and combination of sizes & colors(2)

I’ll pass along the artwork when we get it back from the design crew,
And I’ll update a order & payment deadline when I get the work order confirmed, right now we need to know if were in the 1-10 or 25+ pricing brackets.

Front will have a Skyway logo on the left chest
Back will have an Atlantic coastline with the Destinations outlined
Assateague, MD
Outer banks, NC
Carolina Beach, NC
Edisto, SC
Jekyll Island, GA
Manatee Springs, Fl
Fort Desoto, FL
Fort Wilderness, WDW
Gettysburg, PA

Sunshine Treffen 2010
Day by Day. A baseline itinerary .

Each Stop along the Sunshine Treffen has its own unique and special features and qualities. With points of interest as varied as the treffen participants themselves. Maybe plan on visiting the Wright Bros memorial in Kitty Hawke, or maybe the Botanical Gardens or Navel history in Norfolk & New Port News, VA. The route travels past 2 grand NC aquariums and many Civil & Revolutionary war memorials.

Day 1: Friday April 23rd 2010 ----------Allentown KOA, Pennsylvania
The 1st day of a 2200 mile adventure, perhaps the most difficult day’s drive. From Syracuse to Allentown, PA thru the Pennsylvania hills & mountains. (Yes dogs permitted) …..*NOTE: An extra $15 entrance fee per vehicle into the Assateague National Park is additional to the camping fee. Then the pace slows as you pass under the canopy of trees growing in the Great Dismal Swamp, Followed by a turn towards the coast once again and onto North Carolina’s largest barrier island chain. The OUTER BANKS, NC. Remote and less hectic then the tourist trap of Virginia Beach. Kitty Hawk, where the Wright brothers made history with the 1st sustained flight. To the pirate towns of Kill Devil Hills & Nags Head. Where land based pirates would tie a lantern to an old horse’s neck to lure coastal ships too close to land to shipwreck and be helpless from pillaging. The night’s campground is Oregon Inlet national park campground, which does not accept pre-reservations.

Day 4: Monday April 26th 2010 ---- Carolina Beach, North Carolina
Starting the day continuing from Oregon inlet to Cape Hatteras light house and the 2.5hr ferry back to the NC mainland. A fine time to take a break for lunch and watch out for dolphins. A historic gem of a small southern town. Crossing over the border into Georgia at the city of Savannah, built around planned city parks “squares”. Originally there were four, eventually grown to 24 and are currently 21 small ‘central parks’ with benches, gardens, fountains, and old growth oaks draped in Spanish moss. Among other wildlife in the preserve, watch out from the behind of the hippo.. Tarpon Springs with a large Greek population, offers the ‘sponge docks’ where ships return with fresh seas sponges or you can just dine on a authentic Greek cuisine while watching the ships come & go. Friday is the beginning of the VW Wild Weekend, with drag racing happening on thru the night. Pets cannot ride on the autotrain and VWs with pets must seek alternate route back north.
*Note: Autotrain does NOT accomodate PETS, this is a ~14hour trip where your vehicle is locked into a freight car away from your ability to get to it. Those traveling with pets need to plan an driving route back north. this may adjust your schedule while in Florida for the week.
There are mixed reviews of the Autotrain, but my personal experiance was great and travel was as expected for our trip.

Those traveling with pets or those who wish to return home prior to Sunday may wish to depart Florida a day early. Those not attending the central Florida theme parks are free to make whatever other reservations or plans as they desire. Possibly visit the space coast and NASA, or other points of interest in Florida.

Also what & where in Gettysburg, PA

Gettysburg Self guided Driving tour of the battlefields (large pdf file)
http://www.nps.gov/gett/planyourvisit/upload/GETT_S2.pdf
The Self-guided Auto Tour can be followed by using the park brochure that will direct you through the park. On the tour route there are numbered stops at highpoints of the battle and visitors can take their time in stopping to view the monuments and field exhibits. Directional tour signs will take you through the park to visit the important highlights of the three day battle. This may be the best choice for those with limited time or time enough to spend several hours in the park. There is no charge for the Selg-guided Auto Tour
Audio tours are available for purchase in the park book store in cassette or CD format. After Gettysburg on the rural route home there is the nation’s last wooden double stern-wheel paddleboat operating.

The Historical Paddlewheel ferry crossing on the Susquehanna river just north of Harrisburg, PA
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millersburg_Ferry carries 4 cars at a time powered by an antique tractor engine powering 2 wooden paddlewheels.

http://www.ferryboatcampsites.com/gallery/images/dscn4066.jpg

from Wikipedia:
The Millersburg Ferry consists of two boats. The Roaring Bull V is a red paddle wheeler that was built in 1998. The "flat" of the ferry is 83 feet (25 m) long and the power unit is 50 feet (15 m). It is powered by a 57 horsepower (43 kW) Deutsch Diesel Engine hydraulic system.[3] The Falcon III was built in 1974. It is gray and is 8.3 feet (2.5 m) longer than the Red Bull V. The paddlewheel is powered by a Farmall M tractor engine on a chain and belt system.[3]
According to Captain Donald Lebo, the trip is 4,785 feet shore to shore, about nine-tenths of a mile, and takes about 20 minutes. Passenger traffic in 2009 was above normal because the water level was high and operations did not have to shut for low water. About 20,000 passengers, who were mostly tourists, were served, paying a one-way fare of $2 per person or $6 per vehicle.[5]
The Millersburg Ferry is reached from Pennsylvania Route 147 on the eastern shore in Millersburg and from U.S. Route 11/15 on the western shore just south of Liverpool.[4] It is open on weekends only beginning May 1 from 9:00 a.m. until dusk. The ferry operates daily June through Labor Day 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and it returns to the weekend schedule through the end of September. The Millersburg Ferry does not operate during the months of October through April.[3] Walk on passengers are charged a $2.00 fee for ferry use. Drivers of cars and light trucks are charged a $6.00 fee for themselves and their vehicles

my loosely planned route takes us from Gettysburg thru Harrisburg via Route 15N (Harrisburg bypass 581W to 81N to 11/15N) up to I-80 the E-W PA pike, this avoids a less favorite stretch of I-81 from Harrisburg to Hazleton which has quite a few Mtn grades. From Rt15 you can either take I-80 to I-81N and the interstate way home. Or Rt15 up thru central PA to Elmira and Ithaca for the rural road pace.

For those with a Civil War interest, there’s the National Civil war museum in Harrisburg, PA
http://www.nationalcivilwarmuseum.org/ One Lincoln Circle at Reservoir Park, Harrisburg, PA 17103 (717) 260-1861

there is a KOA in St. Pete. If memory serves me there are more small RV resorts as well.

Thanks Toolman, I'd forgotten about that.. saw it when we were in DeSoto on a December trip a few years back..
the Koa in St Pete online booking doesn't show any tent/van availability but would probably have to call them http://www.koa.com/where/fl/09144/

availability search @ Lake Manatee across the bridge near Bradenton shows 25 sites open as of today http://www.reserveamerica.com/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=FL&parkId=281088

just about 6 weeks.. and can't wait..
now back out to the garage to work on the camper. Embarassed

I just checked and if you put in that you are just tent camping then one site is available. I haven't been to a koa but usually around here you can throw up a dummy tent and sleep in the bus.

But at the cost of a KOA campground, it may be cheeper to stay in a hotel.

Hey Alaskan adventurer, that sounds like a great followup after the Saturday Pier show, I did some investigative googling and sounds like just my kinda place.
Man I'm going to gain 15#'s on this Sunshine Treffen.

I'll pass the word along to the folks on our Sunshine Yahoo group. and add it to the tentative agenda for the day. there's soo much to see & do all along this route that I may have to take this trip more often.

Here's some google info on The Chattaway restaurant

News 10Connects review; Taste of Tampa; Chattaways (Play the Video on Right)

Great E-article in a large pdf of the Chattaway history

ONLY ~22days till we leave on this grand adventure.

The Coastal Carolina Air Cooled VW Club has expressed thier interest and support for our motley crew of inrepid VW Treffen adventurers

Hats off to the CCACVW Club and we hope to just meet them for food, & VW cruising along the VW Sunshine Skyway Treffen route.

Hi Dan,

I wanted to touch base with you before sending out an email to our club members. Is the schedule basically the same, or has it changed in any significant way? How many VWs do you expect to be in the core of your group?

Since your last reply, we introduced our website: www.ccacvwclub.com. I am also going to update our Upcoming Events page, and our Calendar of Events page with the basic information on your cruise, along with including a link to the thread in thesamba form. I will also start a thread in our forum under the Air cooled VW-related Events section.

Once again, do not hesitate to call me if you need any local information. There are several repair shops in the area; their names, addresses, and phone numbers can be found on our website on the VW Repair Shops page. I work for a car dealership corporation ( locations scattered from Swansboro along Hwy 17 down to Wilmington), and I can dispatch one of our wreckers/rollbacks if the need arises (rates are reasonable).

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Gary Holbrook

The group made it safely to Wilmington/Carolina Beach NC tonight. Our club (www.ccacvwclub.com) picked up the group in Jacksonville and Wilmington and joined them for dinner. What an interesting and adventurous group of folks.

It was great to meet you and wish you well and safe travels the rest of the way.

Thanks for the cool key chain! Look forward to getting some of those VW Bus and Thing cookie cutters Laughing
