The curved mounting wedges could probably be heated with a heat gun and molded to the curve of the door...
just thought I'd throw it out there |

Don't quote me on this, but I think I recall looking at this option and it would have hit the c-pillar. It really would be an ideal place though. |
hum, not sure that would be ergonomic, I think it is easier to pull and push on a vertical grab handle to open and close the sliding door. |
Don't knock it til you've tried it! 
It actually feels easier because there is no bending pressure on your wrist. |

What are you waiting for? C'mon up. What more reason do you need than to hang out at the Lucky Lab (or the Moon and Sixpence, my local favorite). I'll get the first round, PDX Westy will get the rest!  
Back on topic, I think the heat gun trick just might work to shape the base as long as one doesn't overheat it. It really shuldn't take much to shape it to that corner. Even a dab of silicone along the back could fill in whatever minor gap might be present. I really like having a handle here though, should have probably been there to begin with.

Installed my Sliding door grab handle today, ten minute install.
There's no reason to use a heat gun to reshape the wedges. If you use the masking tape method to line up the holes from the handle on the front passenger side collumn. Getting it as close as possible to the edge and transfer that tape to the sliding door, using the same "as close to the edge" position. Then using a punch to mark the holes and drill them out with a 1/8" bit and then a 7/16" bit, the wedges are not completely perfectly flush but are close enough that you probably can not tell the difference.
If you are wondering because this handle is angled back toward the van, if it touches when the door is opened. It does not hit anything, actually it looks pretty much stock as if it were ment to be there.

Pretty simple to do, just like the A pillar install. Wedges fit great, just have to
make sure that's where you want to drill. What I did was to remove my passenger side
grab handle and put a piece of masking tape from just past the top hole to just past
the bottom hole. Then I shaded in the holes with a pencil and then transfered
the tape to my slider. I tried to match it up as if I were putting on the A pillar. I have
been happy with the results, but can't say that I use it as much as I thought I would.
Usually I leave the sliders' curtain closed as well as all the other curtains.
So I just grab the door handle to close the slider. I'm glad that the grab handle is there though,
I think it's a worthwhile mod for someone that will use it
often.

any chance you can post detailed pics of the wedges in place and reference pics to help locate the grab handle on the sliding door?
I just did the driver's side grab handle on the A pillar, I had an extra set of wedges so I grabbed the upper edge and cut off the two inserts for the screws that stick out the back of the wedge and used the cutt off wedge as a template against the metal to mark the location of the two screws for the wedge, then used a punch thru the wedge holes, then the 1/8 pilot hole and the final holes. All this for the upper wedge. Installed the wedge (not the cut off template wedge, a good one), then I screwed the grab handle on the upper new wedge and marked where the lower edge would go, repeat and success.

It's as close as to what the A pillar looked like in my mind.
The bottom seems to be alittle more on that curved part than the top.
Here is a pic of the PS Grab handle holes. What I was trying to do was to create a template
that would as closely match this A pillar to the slider door.
I will take some pics tomorrow in the daylight of the wedges in place.
This pic you can see that the bottom wedge fits pretty good, top does too just can't see
that in the pic.

I am loving this mod, already have 2 extra handles I grabbed from the pick-n-pull a while back, but it's the mod I see just forward of the handle mod I am toatally digging!

Yes as you found out the same spacing from the A-pillar works just about perfectly for mounting on the slider. I think madspaniard's suggestion of installing one wedge and then marking the other is probably the best way to do the install.
I use the handle all the time! One of my most useful mods.

Maybe a differenet angle will help?
Top Wedge
Still Top Wedge
The top wedge is not on the curve of the window frame.
You can see in this pic the bottom wedge is further away from the inside of the door
than the top wedge is. It's almost on the curve of the window frame.
Bottom Wedge
You can see in this pic that the bottom is almost on the curve of the window frame.

Thanks for the pics! Clear view where those wedges should go.
I like the Passat one too, I'll make another trip to P&P and will also pick up that Passat dome light with delayed shut off shown in the pic above.
