Anyone know of a place to get a nice rebuilt reduction box trans (drum to drum) or a guy that rebuilds them in the southeast? I believe that mine took a dump on me today on the way to work and I am sick of fooling with old crap that may or may not work!

I was cruising along this morning when I heard the engine rev, let off on the gas, then back on…. No acceleration…. Engine was running perfectly, cuts on, cuts off, etc. It’s like the power is getting lost between the engine and then Trans. I suspect that something is striped… "#$@%$#@"

Any suggestions?

Yeah definitely.
It's kind of wierd that it would be running fine, then not.
Usually when there are transmission problems, they get worse over time.
They don't usually just blow up all at once.

Might be the clutch.
First check the drum, then pull the engine and check out the clutch.

"Check your drum"

Are you talking about the drums like the brake drums? If so they are fine... i replaced the axle seals this weekend... if not what other drums are there?

I am going to pull the engine tonight, i am almost sure that is where the problem is, (gut feeling) there were some moans and groans coming from back there but this thing has sat for the past 35 years so i figured that it was ok, the noise was no wore than the sound of my last bus with the camper interior taken out... and it was a daily driver for about two years.... Uggg this sucks.

Wwhat do you do if the trans input shaft is stripped? It didn't look that bad but it's acting like it could be the problem (again gut feeling.)

I still think the splines on the drum are suspect. Did you get them on tight as hell when you replaced the axle seals? Cotter keys?

Slipping clutch?

TIGHT AS HELLLLLLLL! Smile

I also used a cotter key, the clutch is/ was new... I will find out soon enough what it looks like in there, Also if the drum was to strip wouldn't it have to strip both drums to render the truck un-driveable?

Like i said, i was cruising along just fine and then it got quiet(er) and no acceleration, I checed the engine oil and other stuff i could get to and it all looked great; running smooth, nice and cool.... the problem is definatly between the engine and the trans.

Clutch slippy mean no goey.
The clutch does exactly what it implies, it clutches the flywheel allowing the engine power to transfer to the transaxle and to the wheels.
So, if your clutch is shot, you ain't going anywhere...

The clutch {was} brand new…. I guess since it was just replaced I didn’t even think about it. I just got back from towing it back to the house, which was a blow to my pride… Tonight I’m going to pull the engine and see what’s going on back there.

I checked the shifter coupler its fine… started it up again and nothing… also checked the clutch cable, also fine. I guess all that is left to do is take a look and see what’s messed up, hopefully it’s something simple…

Just a suggestion, but it could be the spider gears. When mine went they went fast. You can check for that by jacking the backend up (both wheels of the ground) with the bus in gear. You shouldn't be able to turn the wheels, and if they do turn you hear a bunch of grinding noises.

Mine snapped when I accelerated out of a turn. I fixed mine and it wasn't to hard.

Good luck.

YUP, new.... brand new... I’ve got maybe 90 miles on it... the engine is a 1776sp and it's in a single cab... no 6k starts here... nice and slow....

The clutch is from oreillys, won't be buying vw parts from them any more...

At least it's an easy fix, i was expecting massive destruction Twisted Evil

You always expect the worst scenario! Glad it's nothing more.

I would take it back to Oreilly's just to let them know. You never know what a manager will do to appease a customer.

Awesome! Very Happy
For a stockish engine I have had the best luck with Scat clutches.
I'm sure there are better ones, but these seem to be ok for the most part.
