Bad Bug , I couldn't tell you for sure , John most likely would have more experience .
I've a mild 2.3 with 45 Dells and a hydraulic 225 @ .050 cam , also a wilder 2.6 with 48Dells, a scat C55 which has a bit less duration but more lift than a web86C, the 2.3 is easy to adjust , wind in the mixture till it starts dropping idle speed then back it out till it peaks idle speed .
the 2.6 is very vague and the idle doesn't respond to the mixture screws as quick and for a novice I could understand how easy it would be to get it wrong. It is my first large duration cammed engine .
I started my apprenticeship as a mechanic when cars still came new with carbs and have tuned a lot of different cars over the years but nothing with a cam this large . I put the vagueness down to the lower manifold vacuum caused by the cam overlap .
Something that did throw me was the 2.6 uses smaller idle jets . I've 68s in the 2.3 and I can run 57's in the 2.6 . |

First of all thank you John Connolly and everyone else for the awesome info i this thread, i have really learnt a lot.
My latest bus: 71 camper.
I wanted a strong hauling, relatively low reving engine so i built this motor:
2276cc
w110/284deg
8.5:1
40x35 nicely ported heads, chinese castings
Wasserboxer/early T3 SVDA ignition set 10-30deg or so
All tinware including flaps and thermostat, velocityring and type4 oilcooler
Cheap sidewinder copy modified to fit "hi flow" heaterboxes
2x40mm DRLA´s with 32vent, 52 idle, 145 main, 180 air
I live at sea level
The transaxle are from a late bug with 3.88 R/P, and 185/65-14 tyres
I found the 52 idles to be perfect from driving around with them for a day or two without the main stacks, AFR reads 16-17 constantly in the progression area witch feels like 0-10% throttle (up to 45mph in fourth)(i tried 57´s - too rich, 50´s -could not pull the bus)
If i give it just a tad more than the 10% throttle the engine dies
Stacks back in, and WOT reads 12.5-13.2, and it feels like the transition is perfect, strong pull thru all the rpms, no hesitation, popping or anything, if i did not know better i would think that it was perfectly jetted.
Oil temp after 1hr 75mph freeway around 210F
But here is my problem:
When i run like 65-75 mph (where i drive mostly) AFR goes up to around 15.5 in what feels like 10%-60% throttle with constant speed
I still havent tried to run with the big main jet and small air
(for 2 reasons; i only have 180 airjets (same in my 4 pairs of dells!), and the car is really running fine)
Ant thoughts? is the lean condition for the relatively light load ok?
Should i try bigger airjets to get the mainjet to come in earlier?
Should i try bigger mainjets?
Should i stop worrieng, remove the AFR gauge and just enjoy the bus

Sounds like it's behaving perfectly to me. Leaning at non-WOT is normal. _________________ It's just advice, do whatever you want with it!

Hi people, I have been reading this thread and agree its a very good thread for armatures such as myself, so thank you.
I have a 2110cc 90.5 x 82.
It has a FK8 cam.
It runs 10.1 to 1 compression.
It has a deck of .042.
Its running CB performance CNC Mini wedge port heads with titanium retainers.
Match ported offset manifolds.
48 mm Italian Weber IDF carbs.
Running 40 mm chokes , 60 idles , 160 main F2 emulsions and 200 air correct.
(I think that's everything?)
My issue........
Running extremely rich at idle , keeps fouling plugs and with my wide band its showing around 11.8 A/F.
My question what would be a good starting point with the idle jets and should I keep the mains or drop them down in size too. Many, many thanks.

what fuel pressure?
What spark plugs?
How many turns out are the idle mixture screws (did you set them?) _________________ It's just advice, do whatever you want with it!

What was the wide band reading at light throttle with the main jet stacks out ? |

Car is on axle stands in shed, haven’t had the main jet tubes out, should that make any difference? |

I need to replace the plugs as it was running like a bag of dicks, and wouldn’t idle, so I need to get the idle jets soughted first I think , many thanks guys.
It’s my first big VW motor build. |

Your Idle mixture screws will adjust the mixture at Idle to the correct idle mixture almost regardless if the idle jet is too big (just means the mixture screw is turned in more ) at light throttle the progression ports are in use and they will be the real indicator of what size jets you need .
I don't have a lot of recent weber experience(only using Dellortos) but I would say your idle jets are too big and you haven't adjusted the mixtures correctly as well . make sure the carbs are reasonably synced with snail type carb sync tool (you can do it by ear with a bit of hose if you have a good ear for pitch ) then turn a mixture screw in till the engine starts to run on 3 pots , screw the mixture out till the revs come up and peak , then go on to the next cylinder till you've done all 4 . Then re check your sync again . If its a long way off fix it and re do the mixture on the carb you've had to adjust . |

I would confirm your heads are 3/4 reach plugs, there seems to be a lot of carbon up the threads.... _________________ Aust. RHD 66 Type 1

You need to
change to NGK 6s
Read the first 10 pages of this thread, so you aren't asking questions that have been answered 20 times already. Right now you are saying you are thirsty while standing right in front of the water trough.
Once you do this then we can help.

it doesn't really to have to do THAT much with your idle, but those 40mm chokes seem awfully large for a 42mm intake valve and what appears to be a street engine. Might have some tuning issues off idle.
that engine might be better suited for some 44 IDFs or 45 DRLAs or choke down those 48s _________________ drive your split. |

Sure is a lot of carbon on the threads and not a hint of lube either.
Are you sure that you are using the correct thread length for the heads? |

NGK "D" plugs are 12mm x 3/4". I've never seen a 12 x 1/2" plug or plug thread. _________________ It's just advice, do whatever you want with it!

Just found this tuning thread lying around. I guess the sticky wore off?
Maybe I missed it but the link for a rental unit goes nowhere and while I can find the LM-2 kit for purchase on ACN I cannot find one for rent. _________________ Volkswagen!
