I was 40 PPM over at idle. Replaced cap, rotor, spark plugs and wires, fuel filter, and catalytic converter. When I looked in the old cat there wasn't anything in it at all. It was a hollow tube. That was relieving.
Problem is that I need to weld in a bung for my O2 sensor. The old cat had one welded into it. Should I even try to retake the emissions test without the O2 sensor plugged in? Would that alone cause me to fail or will all the things that I have replaced (mainly the cat) drop me the 40 PPM that I need?
TIA, Dom |

The O2 is a necessary component of the total emissions system. If it isn't plugged in and helping the digifant adjust the mixture, it will default to a rich mixture. Not the condition your seeking. _________________ Geology with a Syncro rocks!

If you only test at idle, turn the allen screw that is located at the air flow meter out a 1/2 turn. That should lean it out. |

Awesome, thanks everyone. Will driving 12 miles without an O2 sensor kill my cat? Also, does the bung need to be directly in front of the cat and situated vertically or can I put it on the other side of the bend and situated it at a 45 degree or so? It would make welding the bung in easier.
Thanks again, Dom |

just to clarify, this is not the slotted idle speed adjustment screw! |

Well I passed and I owe it to everyone here. My hydrocarbon count dropped from 260 PPM to 95 PPM. That seems like a lot to me. Thanks again, Dom |

So all you did was turn out the allen screw? |

I did the plugs, plug wires, fuel filter, cap and rotor, o2 sensor, cat, and turned out the screw a 1/4 turn (I misread). Everything is great except I missed a couple spots welding the cat on and it has a little grumble. |
