Hi, just got back from the local VW place and talked to the mechanic. He listened and said is was a loose valve guide or seat as some of you mentioned above. Looks like I'll be pulling my first AC VW motor. I did use a wood dowel last night and it seemed to be coming from the 1-2 head. On the case it seemed fine. Tin not an issue. Thanks for all the replies.

So if I pull the head will it be pretty easy to notice a loose valve guide and/or seat?

Yea I think it will be pretty obvious, found these picts in the gallery. I think mine is a guide since there is no smoking???

Found culprit. Loose rod. Also all pistons were burned. PO had no tin between the 1-2 and 3-4 cylinders, no engine seal + more. This is what happens when your engine overheats. Valve train seemed ok. Installed new enine this week.
