What do yall consider restored?
For instance, an early 60's type3 sometime in the late 60's early 70's it was painted. Beautifully correct single stage and correct color. about 5 years ago, the owner bought gizmobob seat covers. Other than that, original matching numbers, engine, all the right stuff.
Is that restored? I don't think so, I'd call it a survivor and if it were being judged, I would expect 2-3 points off for paint and 2-3 points off for replacement seat covers. Let the rest of the car sing it's originality _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

To me anything repainted is restored. Re upholstered is restored. An occasional part replaced is not restored. _________________ I'd be UNSTOPPABLE if not for Law Enforcement and PHYSICS.

So a nice one owner car that had a nice repaint in '69 is restored? I'll disagree but that's ok. Points off in judging a survivor? Yeah _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

If I was selling a car that was redone correctly a long time ago, I would call it an "older restoration". "Restored" makes me think it's a fresh resto.
If I was selling an original paint car with redone seats I'd probably say original paint and list restored seats in the description. _________________ How to Post Photos

It should be common sense to do just as you described, so I don't understand why someone would describe something any different from what it actually is. |

Going off that logic, then my wife's 70 Fastback wouldn't be restored. It got a re-paint (single stage enamel, in the correct color) and new TMI upholstery back in 1990, and then got a set of "custom" rims (8 spokes) in 1998. Other than that it's completely stock (right down to the FI and stock muffler). To me it's restored. To Tram, other than the rims, it would be "it received maintenance" to keep it around. You'd probably call it a survivor then. IDK.
Now my Notch would be more of a resto-mod, in that it's been re-painted in a "non-stock" color with BCCC, had an IRS and disc brake conversion, slightly lowered, along with a 12 volt upgrade and custom tires and rims (36 spoke Shelby's with "big and little tires"), along with a velour interior. It's also had the over riders shaved for that clean look (more like an "N"), and stainless steel side trim added. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

The correct term I think would be preserved. Repaint, upholstery, mechanicals. Never been striped down, welded, used up your kids college fund to put it back together. _________________ I think he meant "rare", as in "not well-done" |

It's not rocket surgery.
Restored means to put it back to how it was originally delivered to the first owner. Dealer approved add ons or mods- ok. Custom wheels? Lowered? Sure, if it can be easily reversed- kudos if original wheels/ tires come with.
Things that aren't easily reversed- wrong color, wrong upholstery, built engines, wrong fuel systems, anything modern day EMPI, built transmissions, stupid incorrect repro dashes, shaved, air suspension, narrowed beam, major incorrect year parts like an early car on a 4 lug pan, anything Airkewld, picture windows, one- piece windows, etc., etc., ... No, NOT restored. Restroyed.
Respray and correct seat covers but showing some wear elsewhere? Conserved, but not restored.
Patina passed off as "only original once"? Fuck you. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

I agree with buddy Tram. Restoration connotes bring back the vw to its original state just like it first rolled off the dealership and passed on to the first owner. That is why there are purists that says even up to the smallest screw that cannot even be seen by our eyes but should be restored to how the factory either coated it or zinc plated it. That is my I had a debate with a fellow vw buddy here that when he used stainless steel bolts and nuts for this so-called "stock restoration" I told him, it wasn't really 100% stock restoration due to the introductions of these stainless steel bolts and nuts. These may not be seen by our eyes, and even if these are hidden away from someone else's prying eyes, still, it did no pass the category. _________________ '67 KG Cabrio (Mickey) ;

So if I get this straight I could say mine is preserved as it has a respray it is slightly lowered ,has aftermarket wheels but everything else is stock and matching nrs and has some period correct accessories?

Much debates will be entertained by your question. It is susceptible for a thousand answers. But, what is paramount is the length of preservations and restoration have been accomplished. If, for me, the entire body is resprayed, it has given the outside appearance of a restored VW, but the interior suggest otherwise. Henceforth, IMO, the key as to whether a VW can be preserved or restored will depend entirely on the extent of the new parts newly incorporated onto the VW. Say, if everything is preserved save for some minor parts that cannot be seen, such as, relays, spark plugs, points, nuts, etc, these may just be the normal and regular maintenance, but not necessarily for the restoration, and I guess, it is a preserved VW. But, say, new carpets and headliners were incorporated, and everything is original, how can we categorize this one? Well, I am not an expert, but IMO, it has departed from the concept of a preserved VW.. Again, these are just my humble opinions.
BTW, stunning and awesome looking Notch you've got there, Bro! _________________ '67 KG Cabrio (Mickey) ;

It's not a bad deal - we don't have a general discussion on market thread, so that kinda ends up in this thread.
Nice car. I just found out my company is about to be purchased, so the timing is terrible.
Also - I do not consider that restored _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

I know this car and was going to buy it last year for about half that price from PO. Things did not work out for me timing wise and with storage. Gutter rust on this car was pretty bad from sitting outside. Red stuff is all there and in good shape. It had some other rust in rockers and fenders tops as well. I have close up pix somewhere.
I'm glad I passed on it because I found my Ghia this Spring. I hope it found a good home and gets back on the road. _________________ 1964 Notchback
