Hi,

I have a pair of wings that came with my old '54 Oval but I stashed them in the loft of my garage until last week.

On closer inspection I think one may be an original wing, the other I think not.

How do I confirm for sure that they are/are not oval wings?

Does it have the metal wire conduit for the headlight wires?

They were still attached to the body rather than the wings hence it adds to my confusion.

look at the mounting area of the wings, it should have pressings between the bolt holes - that will confirm its genuine VW, but not correct age.

Next look at where the running board attaches, does it have a contoured area to match the shape of the running board, or does the wing just smoothly carry on down as normal?

Where the tube for the lights wiring joins the wing, you should see evidence that its been removed (these pieces should remain attached to the wing, being unbolted from the inner wing).

Only the rear fenders had the ribbing between the bolt holes IIRC. From his pics, I think he is talking about fronts. Were used up through '59.

The grey wing is a repro ,The brown wing is origianal us spec.Grey one is a good shape but does not curve over the wheel as much.

Very distinct curve here

This shows a right hand wing and the curve from the mounting face up to the headlamp bowl.Repros tend not to have this or curve is the other way.

Take a measurement across the widest part of the fender................if there is a difference...........one of them has been replaced. None of the reproduction fenders are an exact match for the OG one. A tape measure will point out the difference very easily.

I hope it's okay to jump in and ask a semi-related question...

Should the wiring tubes for the headlights butt against the headlamp bowls or should they go into the headlamp bowls?

Personally i think there was a short piece tube welded to the bowl and the conduit is over the top of that .hard to say if it was welded or has just rusted in place.

Don't want to hyjack the topic, but as many others I am in the same situation. I've been offered this set of front fenders, but am unsure whether they are correct for oval or not. Note that they are not US spec. As they are not cheap, I rather know in advance. Any help is very much appreciated.

The pics of the yellow wings do not show the details of an original oval wing. Pics showing the rear end where it meets the running boards, the flange by the headlight bucket, and the flange at the front bottom by the bumper mount will tell the story.

As far as I can see in these threads, my 56 oval have the same front fenders as until 11. august 59 ( 2 539 142).
And that make sense, since one of my fenders is from a 58, the other one is probably original. And they messure the same (34 cm, ref. the link above). The fenders fit the wheels perfectly.

Many people refer to oval fenders, but we have to be aware that it is early and late oval fenders (which includes late 50').
Or do some have other information?

Edit:
This link shows the difference :
http://forums.pre67vw.com/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=16493

Luckily my car have two correct oval fenders, even though one of them was taken from a 58. It is a different pressing betveen oval and big windows in the light bucket.

I do have an extra set off a 1953 I picked up last year..but I get home in December..and the drivers side has to get an OG sheet metal donor repair in the headlight bucket area..then off to the body shop for final TLC, then back on TheSamba for a fellow in need of a pair of OG front fenders..

Are 58 and 59 fenders the same as a 56/57 Fender up front with the exception of lack of bullet indicators? I found a set I think might be worth getting, and can add in the bullets and shave the top mount signals.

Are the rears the same?

rears are the same from 56-60. Identified by pressings between bolt holes.
