I bought him!
Drove the 160 miles home from Portland, with a few stops for oil along the way and pulled the engine on Sunday. My first beetle since I learned how to drive on one about 20 years ago! Excited to be a member of the community!

Nice Bug and that is a long drive.
I finally replaced my tie rods on my Bug.
Until I compared the new ones to the old ones I did not realize how bad the old ones had become.
Now I just need to change the brake fluid, replace the front brakes slave cylinders, and I will do a test drive to feel the improvement the new tie rods make.
It was a very easy job......once I rented the tie rod screw type breaker tool (don't use a pickle fork).
That little tool is a must have for getting tie rods off. |

Last weekend I finished my front brakes, and took a peek at my rears, the left being full of grease.
Then I adjusted everything and was not happy with how far down to the floor the pedal went.
Then I read the 4 main threads about brake bleeding, and will attempt it this upcoming weekend.
If I have time, I'll change the shoes back there after that. |

I decided it was time I gave my engine a tune and tried to stop some oil leaks, for some reason one side of my car likes to leak more than the other, including push rods, valve cover, axel boots and possibly oil cooler seals.
I also finally got around to acquiring the tool to open my gearbox filler and check the level and I'm glad i did! it needed about half a litre of oil! it must have slowly been leaking from the axelboot.
although I haven't been having running issues I also decided to have a look at my spark plugs. I thought this would be a 30min or so job that turned into a whole day. I found that one of the studs that attaches the manifold to the motor was protruding and blocking the hole for no.1 cylinder. After struggling for about an hour in a space barely big enough to fit my hand in, i took the carbs (dual ICT) and manifold off to gain more access. I used a technique that i saw on Musties youtube channel where to lock to nuts together which enables you to turn in the stud.
So sorted out my valve cover leak with liberal amounts of gasket sealer,
swapped out the plugs and saved my gearbox from an early grave.
my no 3 cylinder plug was a little tight coming out, something going on with the treads? but not sure what to do with this so just put the plug in and tightened it down. seems ok for now. I also requested my valves form 0.006 to more like 0.004 because there was way too much chatter.
next I'm going to get some more clamps for my axel boot and try to reset it to stop the leak there, and also diagnose to knocking sound coming from the rear right.
fun never stops. |

Put new rear tires on my junk. Went from 185/65 to 195/55. Why? Because that's what I could find when my tire separated

I finally got a chance to do some cosmetic improvement to the car.
I buffed out the completely faded paint with polishing compound and a machine. I am pleased with the results.

Over past few days a buddy and I removed engine and tranny from my '59 Bug. We cleaned and refurbished the engine bay with new grommets, seals, rubber and aluminum firewall kit over new tar boards. The brake plates and attendant hardware were refurbished with new slave cylinders and paint. New brake lines installed. Spring plates and torsion bar covers painted. New shocks to be put on it. Waiting for the voltage regulator to see where it can be put. The engine is a Gary Berg built 1776 with dual Kadrons. The Rancho tranny will be nice, too! |

Applied Gliptone carnuba paste wax today. Wax applied by hand with application pad, buff off with machine, finish by hand with microfiber towel.
Considering what this car looked like before polish, I am very satisfied.
I am in the process of pdipping the wheels white as we speak. |

Really got started on the tear down of my '72. stripping it down to rebuild the chassis. Once the pan is done will begin work on the '65 body that will go on it.

Thanks, Everett. Although not the in-depth project that many others are undertaking, it's nice to bring a cosmetically neglected survivor back up to presentable standards. And I've been doing strictly mechanical improvements in the short spots of time I have for the car, so its first cosmetic upgrade is a big deal to me. |

Scotty, your car looks fantastic. Nice work. I wish my 1982 paint could come back like that.
Not being critical. But if you installed the window trim that would really make your pop.
Keep up the good work on your car. _________________ I have learned over the years.
