mr. warehouse,
Very nice early find.
From your first photo, your Heilite Trailer appears to have two wheels ?
Any pics of the hitch assembly / axle frame.
I thought the two wheel version didn't appear until 1960 - '61.
There's a photo of the attached front canopy on singlewheel.com in the vintage literature section but can't tell what year the brochure is from, rare accessory. Good Stuff ! |
Its a single wheel that has been converted to axle.
The seller told me his dad hated the single wheel and switched it to an axle soon after buying. It was converted to an 1 7/8" ball hitch at the same time.
More pictures can be seen in my for sale ad
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1868797
The Heilite with canopy on singlewheel is a later version (axle dual, torsion suspension, tail lights) the canopy on it goes to the peak and is a zippered deal.
I had one similar in the past but could never find the awning for it. |

mr. warehouse,
Great info, that zipper awning is a rare option for the Heilite. Very Cool !
I don't know if it matters but I would have never seen your "For Sale" ad in the ... Vehicles - other VW/Porsche Vehicles Section where as most of the Trailers are in the Other - other VW/ Porsche Related Section ... *noted for trailers. Confusing
Thanks for sharing. |

Almost positive that these rails are Not original..
They look like regular L shaped metal you can pick up at any metal store.
I have original ones in my Heilite. I'll post some pics soon. |

Just purchased this 1957 Heilite Single Wheel Camping Trailer.
Serial No. HE 1610
This trailer was found stored indoors in an old airport hanger. The overall condition is very good, the original top cover was ripped and has since been replaced but the original tent canvas with HEILITE Patch was in excellent condition as was the spring mattress, no rips or tears.
Included were two different style bumper bracket attachments with installation instructions.
Also included was the original 1957 Heilite Sales and Accessories Brochures.
The owner I bought it from had put wheels on the front legs in order to move around and they work great.
I'm looking for a Heilite Camp Kitchen if anyone has one "For Sale", can't wait to enjoy this trailer.

Type3nut.....
Is their a year stamped on this brochure? My Heilite SW has this same flange at bottom edge of side door. This would help me find out the year of my heilite. Thanks in advance! |

I know it's not a Heilite but I just picked up this Sherwood trailer and thought someone here could help. The canvas needs a good cleaning, any recommendations ?

THAT is a cool little trailer. Close cousin to the Heilite by the looks.
I would consider looking for a "tent and awning" supplier. If they cant help you with cleaning at the very least they might be able to direct you to some operation that can.
I've been thinking of starting a post here regarding tent repair and related services that I can update so we have local info (from everywhere) on those resources in one place....I don't know how long that this site allows posts to be updated, but if people wanted to start PM'ing me their local info I could update/edit this post occasionally to include those details.
I thought when I started a tear in my tent I could easily find someone to fix it in my marine oriented community. I was dead wrong...the guys doing boat canvas want nothing to do with the likes of us. I am sure that is a well founded suspicion based on many bad experiences with more traditional tent trailer owners, which I imagine require that the whole damn trailer take up floor space in the shop to effect any repairs
I found a place that provides tents for parties and does repair work on what they sell as well. Sales guy was a classic car enthusiast and got more interested in helping me get my tent fixed after I assured him I didn't need to park the trailer in the shop, that the tent was in a canvas bag in my car.
Should I need any tent repairs in the future I will not mention that it is part of a tent TRAILER...in fact I may just simply mention I have some canvas to repair and leave it at that |

Thanks wythac,
I got some advice to use Woolite. I'm gonna give it a try today and report back my findings. |

Did you see this posted earlier in the thread?
You also might try A-16 or REI for canvas cleaning solutions.

In response to your question about cleaning the canvas:
If you have dry rot going on buy a new canvas.
If the canvas still has some life, clean with a mild soap and water. I bought a small inflatable pool, filled it with water and soap and dunked the whole tent in there.
Erect the tent to let it dry.
Spray the tent with Canvak. Canvak is a canvas treatment material. I think it is parafin in mineral spirits. Cabellas has the best prices I have found. http://www.cabelas.com/prod-1/0005871513996a.shtml
To apply the Canvak I bought a cheap hand pump weed sprayer. Plan on leaving the tent open for a couple days to let it air out.
Best of luck. |

Is there such a thing as a large commercial washing machine that these tents can fit in? Sorry just thinking out loud. My tent can use the whole enchilada cleaning rather than just hitting a few spots. |
