There is very little info available on this unit. Its not even covered in the Bentley. I'd be interested to know if you have any idle speed boost valves in your engine bay?

The Digijet pro training manual says there should be idle control boost valves to boost the idle speed with the AC turned on. However, I have this system and there are no idle speed boost valves anywhere to be found.

dealer installed in 84+85 model year vans.
86+ had the tunnel along the roof
I don't believe 83.5s came with AC
early aircooled (80-83) vans had the Behr in dash units dealer installed.

I had this setup in one of my Vanagons and it definitely had the idle speed boost valves. The system worked fairly well, too.

Many years ago somebody on the Vanagon Email List retrofitted one of these units to his Westfalia. The plastic shroud stuck out a couple of inches into the front of the poptop hole, so he carved a really nice wooden lip to extend the roofline back a bit and cover the back part of the shroud. Can't seem to find a picture of it...

from Ben's place page.
alot of good reading there. http://www.benplace.com/vw2.htm

#11 in this pic
http://www.benplace.com/vanagon_digijet_engine_component.htm

it's labelled for power steering but on an A/C equipped van they would have another for AC. funny that the engine in the image doesn't have power steering or A/C but does have an A/C mounting bracket.

My original family 1986 vanagon has this AC installed since van was originally purchased. Seems these units where still offered on 1986 vans at times. this van was purchased in Dec 1985. The AC cost $1495 as an option, the AM/FM radio was $695, the side stripe at the belt line was $149 as was the molding trim option.

I like this AC unit better than the later, it kept everyone plenty cold on long desert trips, and it does not clutter up the cargo space head room as the later units do.

the AC does connect to the idle speed control box. at least that is how mine is wired.

Anyone have a link to the installation manual of this "dealer installed" AC system?
