There is a shift rod tube guide or "hanger" that holds the front end of the front shift rod up.

The hanger holds the shift rod up and supports it so the ball on the end of the shift lever can go into the cup at the end of the rod. Without a hanger, the shift rod would flop down and the ball on the shift lever wouldn't be in the cup (no shifting).

Does this help? Sounds like you have the hanger but maybe need a new bushing (G)?

AFAIK, the other front hanger was only used 1966-67 when they changed the design of the front shift tube. Note bushing "H" in the lower drawing - that mounts in the later front hanger. For 1960 you should just have E & G to support the front tube.

Same thing as yours, except it's a '59 & earlier bus so the forward shift guide is moved back ~ 6" further than yours.

I need the bushings that hold the "N" rod at both ends. Or I just need to redesign better less friction ones

here is my shifter with guide behind it. pin sits very high and the whole thing seems to kind of twist when you try to get 1st. is this normal? the shift coppler seems good.
