Not exactly sure of the EDP coating process, but Nelson was saying it's like powder coating. KSR could probably explain it. Everyone that was able to touch one of the lids had a good response. I guess Pip's going down in history now as the first consumer out there with one! I can't wait to see it on a car. _________________ I will never lie, but sometimes the truth changes.

Interesting that the sedan pricing really is about what a decent original one goes for. A bit of an apples to oranges comparison, but I have never found sedan Ws to be that hard to find, their prices pretty stable at about $250-$450.
'Verts are another story.
I saw the lids this past weekend also and they are indeed very nice. Talked to Nelson quite a bit, he has a long history of making parts, some of which may be in your cars already and you never knew he made them.... |
.......... No doubt given the time they took they are dead-on, and once painted no one will ever know period, .......... |
There will always be a way to tell the repros from the originals, with a trained eye. |
True in most cases, but seems reasonable this forum should of produced at least one set of trained eyes by now who have seen the new lids in detail. So until someone can specify clear differences by just eyeballing it, and more importantly after its been painted, prices are coming down for og lids.
If it gets down to splitting hairs with the smallest of visual differences, og prices are still coming down since 98% of rather knowledgeble folks still won't be able to tell the difference. If the differences are that negligible, whatever they may be, discriminating buyers of the new lids will just have them micro-adjusted pre-paint to pass all the time as og, so they can say they are og when asked, so og prices are coming down.
Knowing KSR's detailed reproduction process, its going to take a weenie with a couple types of calipers measuring to 3 decimal places to advise what those differences are, and even so at that point, og lid prices are still coming down.
At this point the hobby has interestingly and notably changed forever, as from here on in many folks will be asking every car owner with a vert decklid (resto-custom or stock car) if the lid is repo or og, and they will only be able to take the owner's word on it (and some owner's might offer up a few extra words after being asked trust me), so what that means you figure it out.
To some degree (depending on the car) I can see car selling prices actually being negotiated down if the vert decklid can't be a verified as an original in some way. The vert decklid is an iconic and rather symbolic holy grail part in the hobby, so a notable line has been crossed that I don't believe many folks are contemplating much. Its completely different than reproducing the Heb decklid out there now since you can't pop a Heb decklid on any beetle, but now every split and oval can have a vert decklid.
Perhaps a level of achievement has been made, these lids will serve some sort of purpose, but the gravity of that achievement is likely to have an irreversible measureable impact on the hobby, and its not all positive for everyone. After some of the initial excitement wanes it will be interesting to hear some more seasoned opinions. |

I just heard from ISP (who will be stocking them along with WCM and others) says once they receive them, they'll be advertised on their site, ebay and thesamba. Everyone is going to have one, post ovals too I'm sure. I'm sure I'll end up with one as well, though I'd never present it as an OG, regardless of the quality. I can see next Mays BOR swap, "NOS vert lid, $$$". |

Particularly for those pimping $3000 decklids...
Over on the bus forum there's a similar discussion of $1500 bus engine lids. _________________ -Thom

On my 55 i was going to have to prop the decklid for extra cooling for the 2276 . Now there's a solution without having to fork over 1500-2000 dollars.
I'm happy.

I'm one of the few that believe the vents in a 'vert lid clash totally with the vents in a split and oval sedan. _________________ CH³NO²

Nope.
If you look at the pic of the lid Pip posted of the first one sold, that difference has been rectified. _________________

One thing I'm wondering, is that do those decklids have the handle holes in different locations as the originals?
The oval T-handle holes and split L-handle holes are not in the same place on original lids...
Edit:
I stand corrected. The split and early ovals have the holes in the same location. _________________ ~Kris~
