|
|
Hi,
What did low lights (specifically in 58/59) use originally when connecting the heater boxes to the body?
I've seen 2 different flavors. One is a flexible plastic tube that connects connects the two.
The other is a paper tube and a round canister (canister on towards attached towards the body side) and I think the canister is for noise reduction?
Thanks! |

Ah?
This sounds confusing to me...?
The earlier engines (pre 40 horse) with stale air heating systems usually have a flexible metal tubes connecting them to the body. Inside under the rear seat were some canister baffles that are sorta' clam shell like with metal tabs holding the top to bottom. _________________ jeff

The paper tube sounds like a hack.
The correct connector is a flexible metal tube made of spiraled steel, with an insulated vinyl cover. This connects to the small 'mufflers' which in turn connect to the body. Keep in mind we're talking about the bits on the outside of the car, forward of the engine.
CIP1 et all sell a ribbed plastic tube with fiberglass insulation inside. These pieces are much longer, so you would need to remove the heater muffler. _________________ -Thom

Thanks,
That's a perfect description. I have the 2 canisters, in perfect condition. Just need to find those steel / vinyl covered tubes to keep her original. |

Did they always have the covers? My 56 was pretty original with 65,000 miles on it and there were not any covers on my flex tubes. Maybe they fell off. |

Does someone has a picture about what we are talking?
Is it the round things shown here on this picture?

No Patrick, those canisters are in the interior under the backseat/stow area.
My 59 had no inslulated vinyl cover around them either, maybe a cold climate part? _________________ It's not about the window, it's about the people.

I don't think so. You should be able to see these canisters when looking under the car. The only thing you'll see under the seat is the pipes that go to the heater tunnel(rockers).
The only tubes that I've seen covered with insullation are the ones that I've seen in Oval windows. I think these Oval window metal tubings are the same diameter as the Karmann Ghia tubes, but you'll need to cut them shorter to fit the Karmann Ghia.
Rich Kimball (Ovals Only) has these tubes available. |

As you can see on the 56 there is no "silencer" under the car or under the back seat. Just one lone pipe. Another VW improvement towards more enjoyable driving. I don't have my records with me but this should follow the Beetle time line.

When was the silencer moved under the back seat of the Karmann Ghia?
Maybe at the same time the kick board was added to enclose the area under the front seat. |

I have a 57 karmann ghia
I 've no silencer under the back seat.
I had this part between the engine and the body.
But i think that it's not the part for a 57 ghia.
is it this one ?
Or this part ?
I think that it is the last part but I'm not sure
Where do you find it ? |

Yes, it is the last part that is correct for a 1957 karmann ghia _________________ Dutch Karmann-Ghia and coachbuild lover.
