I found this today while at a show and had to buy it. Cool
I know it's pre-49, but do any of the "experts" know exactly what year, or are all the early ones the same?

The 46-49 mirrors look like that. And so does 30's Ford mirrors. So it could be either of them. Wink

So is there any way to tell a Ford mirror from a VW?

From the shape of the balljoint shape it could be a VW mirror because the Ford mirrors I have seen are slightly different. The base with the hole for the screw is not completely round as on yours. The Ford ones I have seen have flatspots so you can lock the base with a key when you tighten the screw.

It's hard to say exactly from the angle of the backside pic. It looks like it's a Ford mirror, but the difference is in the balljoint as Hebster mentioned. Ford mirrors have a raised, semi-round area where the mount goes into the back of the mirror.

The odds would say it's a Ford since there area several more 37-41 Fords running around then pre-48 VW's, but you never know!

Ford 1937-40 mirror on eBay. For comparison. Wink

Here's a 46-49 split mirror.

Yes, good deal. In that picture the balljoint base looks identical to my Ford mirror. Smile

That creation doesn't need an interior rear view mirror since there isn't a rear window.

One may want to see what's happening in the back though. Wink

empiracer,
It will go in one of two places. Dennys '46, or a display case.

So this must be a non VW, although the seller says it's absolutely a real VW 1949 football mirror. What do you think guys?

I think there was a similar one in an old austin devon pickup project I had.

Unfortunatly I don't have it anymore and have no pictures of the mirror

It wouldn't suprise me if mine had the wrong one! It was a dreadful car. More rust than your worst nightmares and some strange additions.

Oh well I tried and I failed Embarassed
