I started polishing the ghia. Still needs waxing but looks a lot better already:

Thanks dude.

Polishing is done. Basically what I did is:
Wash with water.
Wash with Meguiar's Gold Class Shampoo
Meguiar's Clay
Meguiar's Deep Cristal Paint Cleaner
Meguiar's Deep Cristal Polish
Meguiar's Deep Cristal Carnauba Wax

The final result isn't a mirror-like shine, but it has a nice semigloss to it and the 30 years of dirt and grease in the paint is gone. So I'm happy.

What's next: Install new window rubbers when they arrive, install Sapphire II radio when faceplate arrives, wet sand &polish rims and install caps with stickers, polish chrome and trims, clean new used floor mats, clean inside& trunk& engine bay, lower the front a tad more, service the brakes, adjust valves.

Thanks John Cool

The exhaust plans have changed.. The oldspeed engine as I designed it (especially with required brakes upgrade) was just gonna be too expensive.. For that money I could buy a nice 912. So the stock engine is staying, it's been overhauled 2 years ago and runs perfect anyway!

This is an effective, safe and much cheaper option on the brake upgrade: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=846684

Jim Kikuchi ("Banzai KG") has run them on his Ghia for years: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=846684

Might even save enough on the brakes for other goodies. Smile

Thanks bro!

Polished one (on the right). Wet sanded 1500 & 2000, and then Meguiars (yes, again) Metal Restorer:

New seals arrived this morning from Mike @ House of Ghia. I'm just gonna install the hood seal for now, the rest will have to wait till after the weekend.

Old & new:

all solid underneath (dark spots are seal residue, not rust):
