The topic says it all. I was asked if this was possible? And if I could do this? Well I like a challenge once in a while so I agreed to the job. And Here is the Job in progress to the finished product. I do not polish so I gave them back ruff machined. I had given them back to there owner at the Classic.
I Did not show the register that I had cut to locate the ring I just did not take a picture the bead seat for the tire is 3/4 of an inch and the ring is Tig welded both front and back.
I have a couple more pictures in my gallery of these and other projects I have worked on for my cars. _________________ "What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: 'tis dearness only that gives everything its value. That's pretty cool.
I'd like to see them again after having the weld smoothed out and the face polished or chromed. _________________ Cheers,

It takes about two weeks turn around to machine and weld. That is between my day job , family and small must do projects. And I charge $400 to do a set of two. _________________ "What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: 'tis dearness only that gives everything its value. Not the same as a 4.5.
These spokes stick out WAY farther than a "regular" 4.5"
Still waiting to hear if polish / chrome will be possible with the welding.
These may just be nice wall hangers.... |

so how do you keep them from warping during the welding process? _________________ -DHP |

I preheat then I start tacking across and around until it's totally welded because I use a tig welder, not a mig for better control and penetration. I also machine a register in the rim to accept the ring for a tight fit. _________________ "What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: 'tis dearness only that gives everything its value. I guess you could narrow them just enough to get the same look as a 4.5" from the front, with the spokes sticking out the same amount as an OG 4.5"? _________________ Strive for perfection in everything. You'd need 2 cuts for that.
1 on the face, and 1 on the rear.
by the time you pay for a deep 6, pay $400 per wheel (2 cuts) you could buy a sets of real 4.5's

Mr.Warehouse is right, many things can be done but is it worth the cost... if the 4.5 can still be found? _________________ "What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: 'tis dearness only that gives everything its value. I was thinking about just having the front narrowed, to get the same look from the outside; i know the overall width would be more than a 4.5" but it still would be around 5 inches, just guessing as i don't have a 4.5 to compare with my deep 6s. _________________ Strive for perfection in everything. It can be done, I would just need to know the measurement of the OG 4.5" lip to the bottom of the spoke, to make it look like a correct 4.5". And yes, it would be 5". _________________ "What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: 'tis dearness only that gives everything its value. It is not so easy. If you look at the drop center of a deep 6, there isn't anywhere you can cut out an inch and be able to mate the pieces back together. The drop center has a taper. You can do this to a late flat 6. A buddy did just that. _________________

It would need to be cut lower at the spokes to make it look right. I cut a register in the base and then weld the pieces together then machine a radius between the base and the ring to make it look correct. _________________ "What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: 'tis dearness only that gives everything its value. I had noticed the taper and saw from your pics that it had to be cut at the bottom of the lip. I will have to find out how deep the lip is on a 4.5" to be able to replicate it. _________________ Strive for perfection in everything. Take the best that exist and make it better. One of my next projects will be to do some 16's for my car as soon as I can afford a set. I think I will only make it a 5 wide though. I have the tools and the time I just don't have the money. _________________ "What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: 'tis dearness only that gives everything its value.
