I'm in the 380ish range at 70 up a steep steep grade in the 100+ degree summer heat - 10% humidity - MAYBE - more like 6% - and at 5k-6k foot elevation. On the 6% grade - screaming at 62 in 3rd - I can hit 386-388 - same weather - near 6100 ft elevation.
On the flats - 360-370 at 75 _________________ Ryan

my bus has been off the streets for about 3 weeks already and i honestly can no longer stand the withdrawal of not driving her around.
she was my daily driver and she would see the beach every other day. ever since then, i have not been at the beach :/ _________________ 1977 Camper - (sold)

Jalex
You will not regret it. If you can find it - read my post on my camper special experience From tear down to buildup. Dang long thread - but worth the read.
Some things I would advise...
If you can find a 72-75 or 79 exhaust setup (heater boxes and tin - do a search on that) with the 4 to 1 extractor - use that instead of the 76-78 exhaust as they're a tad more restrictive! Go with the Thunderbird if you can.
I can honestly say I have enjoyed THIS bus more than any other thanks to Jake Raby. _________________ Ryan

|
|
To add a different twist:
Fact:
My '69 Westy had a 1776 cc engine built by Jim at Archway Imports here in St. Louis (actually way back in the day when he was at The Buggy Shop) and I put over 165,000 miles on it without any problems. Just did my own religious maintenance-oil/filter change and valve adjustment, etc.
And yes, it gets really hot here in the Midwest summers! I only went about 65 on the highway with that engine.
The 1776 engine had a stock German Mag case--forged crank, rods,
pistons/cylinders, mild cam, an old-school 009 dizzy, and a 2bbl progressive Weber with a working electric choke!
I just this year replaced that engine, (because it was finally getting tired and needed a major rebuild, which I decided was not worth the cost)
with a Type 1 2027 cc--Dual 44IDFs--
which is just now approaching 3,000 flawless miles. So we'll see how this one does in the long haul. Just for fun, the old 1776 is in my street legal rail buggy with dual Webers and new exhaust--and still actually runs very well!!
So, hats off to Jim at Archway--he's been building these Type 1 motors for many, many years and does a great job giving the customer a reliable, cool running engine. A "stump puller" for the bus, as he puts it. (They all do leak oil, however!!!)
Just a different angle on this thread--that said, gotta give kudos to Jake for trekking out and fixing Jim's bus motor--that is simply unheard of in today's world.
Until I have Type 4 experience, I guess I fall in the dumb Type 1 category!
Great story, great thread--keep on bussing!!
Cheers..... _________________ '69 Westy Camper

Nice to hear 1st hand about a product.
My 2007cc TIII engine was build by a good chap in Idaho who did off-road engines and it didn't leak oil so I know it can be done. I'm glad that Jake & team take the builds serious enough to cover even this often missed task. _________________ Toby http://www.aircoolednut.com/

I just noticed on Jake's site: http://forums.aircooledtechnology.com/
He is offering 10 % off on the Camper Special engine kit till the end of March. To those that are wanting to improve their bus, this is a fantastic rare opportunity. _________________ "You can lead an aircooled to water, but you can't make it drink"

Where is it about the 10% off? I can't seem to find it in the forums, or on his store website. I may be in the market for a new engine this spring/summer and if I can order early enough and knock 10% off a CS this might become a bit more doable. _________________ 1976 Transporter "Betsy" [Reef Blue, Rebuilt 2L w/ Raby CS heads, 010 Auto. ]

Glad that Opossum's CS is still running strong!

One thing I disagree on is the whole thing that
"it's only a piece of paper"
Sounds like the same buzz that everyone is saying
about fed up stocks on WallStreet.
I would say that if you send something by frieght
there should be some kind of insurance to cover
damage, unless it's AIG of course.
If you DYNO TEST it - back it up for at least 30 days or so.
Or have them pay extra for insurance that you as a busness
person can buy.
Correct me if I'm wrong. _________________ CARRY ON
