After completing the short axle conversion, I decided it was time to fill the transmission with fluid. I crafted up a fill funnel using a long narrow funnel and a long piece of tubing from leftover trickle irrigation. Worked out great. Just shoved the tube into the fill hole, zip tied the funnel to the deck lid spring and filled it up. So far, no leaks! Who needs a pump? _________________ My 70 beetle was totaled Now to build the Ghia I always wanted. Rest in peace Ruby, I will miss you. Hello <insert Ghia name here>! |

They are never done!!
The laundry list was a bit long but after finishing my Ghia way back in 2006 and racking up around 11,000 miles it was time for a bit of a freshening.
...
Pulled and rebuilt the pedal cluster (I had a nagging squeak every time ime depressed the clutch pedal) I upgraded the accelerator pedal with an X-Celerator Speed Wheel from Classic Bug Parts. I now have I a nice, smooth and most importantly, QUIET pedal cluster.
... |
I'm happy for you that replacing all of those pedal cluster pieces did in fact take away that nagging squeak every time you depressed the clutch pedal.
The next logical step would have been a hip replacement, and that would be a lot more expensive! ... and doing that job yourself to reduce costs isn't even an option.
As usual, all of your latest efforts add up to another job well done kingkarmann.
Your Ghia is beautiful, and it's great to hear that you are enjoying using it regularly. |

I'm beginning to enjoy my Ghia more every day. Sorted one of the last few niggles today: I have 165/80/R15 at the back and 165/65/R15 on the front, with 2" dropped spindles and adjustable beam - no rubbing on the fenders but only after a lot of trial and error, I might add.
This setup gets the stance right and keeps the engine revs right for the wheels at the back, but it does mean an under-reading on the speedo. So I bought a speedometer gear from an advertiser here on the Samba and installed it today. Accuracy is within about 1-2%. Not good enough for the space program, but good enough for me and the ever so keen cops we have around here.

Nice, Do you have a link to that Kiwi? |
I think this might get you there, Darrel. If it doesn't, I'll PM you Daryl Sandberg's email address. He was very helpful. I'll test the gear some more and post an update on its performance at the end of the week. (Their advert appears every third week or so in the Featured ads.)

Wow! Just wow! That's what our Ghias are for. Great countryside, great photos, and, of course, a great car in a beautiful colour. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

1965 KG newbie here! Have been working on my Ghia for a few months now, and just recently discovered this forum! I purchased a coupe and a convertible June 2016, and started working on the coupe first ... it runs, the vert needs an engine.
Have started putting everything back together and have experienced no particular difficulties!
Here are some pics.
Day 1 - Just backed into the garage. Has a little nose damage and minor dents and scratches.
Dash is mostly original ... aftermarket fuel gauge and radio.
Body and paint complete. Went with nerf bars until I can afford to fix the bumpers.
Shaved the dealer installed antenna and mirror holes, and mounted aftermarket swan mirror.
Reworked dash ... added a rubber washer around the ignition switch to prevent scratches ...
cannot find if there was an original escutcheon (??)
Repaired the nose ... about 4 hours of hammering and "skim coat" of bondo. The entire car is "mostly" bondo free,
only needing small areas of "smoothing"!
Refurbished deck insignia ... still working the "VOLKSWAGEN" script
Completed rear deck and new rubber connector.
Original front towel bar bumper ... needs work ... saving my $$$$
Original rear towel bar bumper ... needs work ... saving my $$$$
Engine compartment (as purchased ... no work done here!)
Rear view with nerf bars and cheese grater.

Installed an X-drilled Porsche/Chevy rotor. Painting the caliper, it's in the oven curing. Decided to throw on the 17X7 rim to see what the initial fit/clearance would look like on a stock beam with lowered spindles... It actually looks like it will clear the fender if I remove the jacks. I am certain a 2" narrowed beam will be the way to go.

Installed the front and back glass today ... took my time, and spent about 1 hour each. The toughest part was keeping the rubber on the glass while trying to install it! I tried masking tape, no go. Then I "bungee'd" the rubber on overnight, and when the rubber had a little "memory", it stayed in place during the installation. I used plenty of soapy water, working inside-outside-inside-outside, a little at a time until done.
Then, every time I worked on the outside, I used an "orange stick" to coax the rubber molding edges into position. An "orange stick" is typically used by beauticians to push the cuticle back when doing ladies nails. It works great, and doesn't scratch the paint! Any small hardwood dowel will work ... sand the edge to a rounded chisel point (not a pencil point ... see pic)
Front Glass - Original glass, new rubber.
Rear Glass - Original glass, new rubber
Orange Stick - Used to push the edges of rubber molding into position, and not scratch the paint. Any hardwood dowel should work: 3/16" diameter x 6" or 7" long.

1965 Karmann Ghia - Door Panel Rebuild
Yesterday, I prepared my new door panels for installation.
I included the edge piping (name ??) from the original, and the aluminum strips.
To make the holes, I used a small drill bit, drilling from the "finished" side.
I learned (testing on the old/original vinyl) that if you try to drill through vinyl on the "backside', the drill bit catches the fabric and "wound" it up around the bit.
I first placed masking tape where I wanted the trim to be, then measured and marked each hole.
1965 Karmann Ghia - Hood and Deck Lid Seal Installation
Today, I installed the hood and deck lid rubber seals. I used 3M 8008 - Black. The trick is to let it dry (15-20 minutes) before you bond the pieces.
First I roughened up the paint, spread the sealant on both the car edge and the rubber seal.
After waiting about 15 minutes for the glue to dry, I carefully put the seal in place.
Then, using clothes pins to hold the seal, let it dry for about an hour.
Now, I need to install the hood, and realigned the lock pins.

I get the occasional itch to do something to the Ghia before the next show season.
To me, the "trunk" area didn't pop. I'm sure that somewhere I stole this idea but for the life of me I cannot remember where I saw it. I tried recreating what I thought I saw by installing polished aluminum strips to the recesses of my fuel tank.
I ordered 1/8" x 3/4" flat stock. I the cut and formed the stock to match the contours of the tank. I fastened the strips using 3M double sided automotive trim tape. The tape is fairly thick,about1/16". It made the strips sit too high. I redid with trim & emblem adhesive. I'm much more satisfied.

Actually I found a chrome sender cover but it didn't fit.
Not sure if one is made to fit mine. I guess I will have to get to polishing _________________ "Depression is a malfunction of the instrument we use to determine reality.”
