Got home from my 3 week road trip to find the battery in my new to me 1969 coupe dead. Replaced with a Group 42 Duracell from Batteries Plus.

Now to try and find some tires for her. 165 80R 15 are hard to find locally. What does everyone recommend for a summer tire?

I chased down an oil leak, which required removal of the generator and fan shroud. I tucked the gen wiring out of harm's way so nicely that after reassembling everything else I completely forgot to reconnect it.

5 engine-starts and 50 miles later the battery was low enough for the electronic ignition to start acting up...

Lesson learned: the gen light doesn't come on to tell you that it's completely disconnected. Very Happy

Took all my interior to a local upholstery guy yesterday about an 1 1/2 hours away who has done a lot of work on Ghia's. Decided to go with a dark gray with perforated light gray in the centers, black canvas top, gray headliner, and sun visors will be the perforated light gray to match. He's going to cover all dash pieces, top and bottom, and hinge covers. Should blend in well with the burgundy, and since it looks almost black in the shade will look nice without taking away from the exterior color. Will post before and after pics in my thread when I get it back in a couple weeks.

He had this beautiful 60 Ghia vert in the garage, he is doing it all in Italian tan/saddle(?) leather, requested by customer from Pennsylvania, French stitching all around, is currently installing headliner and canvas top. It's low to the ground but looks professionally done, very slight bend on the rear tires. I'll post some pics in my thread later.

Spent the day tinkering on a lot of little things, door panel grommets, tightened up and reset the gas lid, thanks Marc for the 'How To', it pops open much easier now. Installed trans seal as several people said I should since the old one has been in there since I bought the thing 6-7 years ago and haven't run it yet. Used a seal puller I bought from HF, worked really well. Coated the outer edge with some motor oil and it popped in with a little smack using a soft piece of wood. Now I need to figure out how to get those throwout bearing clips around the back of the arm. I saw something on here or screw tube showing how to do it, so will search for that. A few steps closer!

Pull both carbs and drained the gas tank. The drain hole around the cap plugged and (apparently) the cap allow water into the tank.

Running better than ever now.

I have a 1971 and I need to drain the gas tank to remove old gas that's been sitting for several years. What's the best way? I was thinking of siphoning. Or removing the line at the fuel filter by the back wheel. Is there any other options? I don't need to remove the tank.

I would just drain it right at the point of the tank at the hose below. If it's old or bad gas, why run it through your lines to the filter point? Then you have to blow the lines out. Put a pan underneath, remove whatever clamp is connecting the fuel line to the tank, drain it. I would also undo the nut and pull the internal filter screen to check it and clean or replace. Shouldn't be too difficult, if you pull the wheel and crawl under!

I haven't done the job yet, but I'm pleased to report that the parts Rudiger Huber shipped in 1 April have arrived today, 19 July, after both of us had given up and assumed the parcel had gone AWOL. Due to C-19 restrictions, the parcel had to come by sea, via Singapore. While NZ Post put a sticker on the parcel saying "Damaged in transit", the packaging inside the box had been done so securely that there was no damage to the parts. (I had held my breath for a time while carefully opening the parcel, I can tell you.)

I'm very pleased for 2 reasons: I badly wanted the softer German rubber and in particular the integrated rubber for the door window - top and vertical in one piece. That should tidy the corner and improve both the appearance and the sound-proofing. The other is that the chrome channel set is the very last OEM channel parts Rudi and left. My Ghia should, in due course, have pristine channels and soft rubber all round. (Windscreens and front trunk done previously.)

Thank you Rudi.

Also waiting for a beam from the USA. When I re-assembled my Ghia in 2013-2015, I used what I had. Now I can afford to take a little more time and use better parts.

Cleaned up the trunk area, installed a wiring cover, sound deadening Foam mat, squeezed in a jack and installed the Rally strap to hold the spare wheel.

Spent a little time underneath today. Replaced the steering shaft guibo and the rear outer spring plate bushings. Squeak is gone in the rear.

The Mrs. and I took her out for a run to the local village for ice cream.

Installed euro tail light lenses, I like the look of the amber against the green. Then followed up with clear front turn signals and chrome bulbs to clean up the look of the front.

A day at the races. A day at Salisbury Races to be exact here in the UK but the only horses we had were around 70 for me and 36 for my friend Dave taking his newly acquired '58 to a show for the first time.
Diamond Grey if anyone was wondering.

To match your horses, is Dave planning to perhaps put a Shorrock in there? Wink

Finished replacing the horns and boot (so nice to have a working horn again) and starting to move through some of the seals the PO just painted over on the Maaco paint job. The turn signal housings were not even removed, WTF. Drives my OCD crazy.

We have been smelling some fuel inside the car and found some sweat under the gas tank, looks like it is leaking from the seam where the outlet pipe fitting is welded in. No drips, just sweat. Ordered a new cheap Dansk tank from Parts Geek and we will see if it is decent enough to go with.

Making my way from the front to the rear and next up is a front hood emblem seal and a new gas tank flap.

This thing is absolutely beat up. Rolling Eyes

It won't be a Shorrock for two reasons: 1. Very difficult to find a VW model at a reasonable price and 2. Only made for the 40hp 1200 and 1300 engine. Smile

Finally got my replacement tank. I ordered the Dansk tank from Parts Geek expecting the worst. Ended up with a Chinese EMPI tank in a couple of days. Fitment was less than factory to be honest. The filler and vent hose connections were 1" shorter leaving me to adjust the current hoses to make the connection proper and sealed. Barely made it. Ordered new filler and vent hoses to fix it the right way.

Also the tank is not as deep as the factory tank so I am guessing the capacity is less than factory. But happy to have the fuel smell from the seating old tank outlet fitting solved and moving on.

Had some time to replace the emblem seal (which was missing) and a new gas flap seal.

The dash in my 1970 was roached so I got a new one. I hate the fake wood grain so I went black.

Trying to find someone in New England that knows how to replace the clutch in my 1969 Ghia Auto Stick. I have all the parts, I just need to find a shop. Anyone have a suggestion?
