This was my uncle Bob Kuhn's VW store:
Looks like it's just a vacant building now according to Google Maps. The used car store at about 2235 next door was the parts, service, and body shop. I think it closed in about 1972.
Henry Motors, Inc. on Exchange St. in Akron was where I apprenticed. It became Dave Walter VW in 1977, and is still a VW dealer today- Volkswagen of Akron:

In '69 my father bought a 7 passenger Bus to haul us kids around from Vellner Motors in Red Deer Alberta Canada. I remember being fascinated by the stack of fiberglass Dune Buggy bodies outside the service entrance and seeing my first ever 914 in the show room. My brother started his apprenticeship there shortly after but after 8 months of washing the wax off new cars with varsol he went up front to see how the apprenticeship paperwork was progressing and the secretary told him he was listed as permanent car wash. He quit. I can still remember how red his hands were and how they bled from the varsol.
Not long after VW pulled the delership (rumors have it was for warrenty fraud) and they switched to selling holiday trailers and RVs. (Vellner RVs) His son still runs the RV business but it moved to a bigger facility and the old dealership building has long ago been replaced by an office tower.
I still have the Bus!
Next up was Riverside Motors. I bought my Rabbit new from them in '76. (I still have it too!) They were in an old service station downtown for a while (next to the river) then moved to the north hill into a new facility. They didn't last long there and last time I checked it was a boat dealership.
Shortly afterwards a fellow with a strong Europian accent started Progress Motors on the south end of town. He ran a very tight ship and treated his employees very well including proffit sharing incentives. Very good place to deal with and take your car with very knowlageable and experianced long term staff! It was THE place to take your VW or buy parts for many years.
Enter retirement for the owner - sold to a local businessman who owns 4 other foriegn car dealerships in the area - fired all the long term staff - started with all green people - total gong show in there now! No idea what you want at the parts counter, no parts in stock so multiple trips to get work done, no calls returned and new faces on a regular basis. |

I used to have this little keychain fob... can't remember where they came from, but they used to be popular. Anyone know the source? AAA maybe? |

Ours in Virginia came from DAV....Disabled American Veterans. After you got your plates, they would send these out to be placed on your keychain and if your keychain was misplaced, it could simply be placed in any mailbox and returned to you. Presumably for another donation.....but it really worked. |

Took these pics of what used to be Moses Volkswagen in Texarkana, TX in May 2008.
My parents, and grandparents had all bought VW's from this store back in the 60's.

This is Cartune Volkswagen in Middlesbrough England. This was a significant dealership that not only supplied new VW's and Porsches, but also their own brand of Aircooled VW tuning parts and did engine tuning work much like how EMPI started out. The building was state of the art at the time, which was unfortunately demolished to make way for an ASDA (Wal Mart).

I went to see the dealership where my 1967 Bug was first bought. Ghent VW in Salinas, CA. You can see the old VW sign, or what is left. It looks like it stores old fire trucks now.

Someday I hope to own this bus, with a Ghent plate frame on the front.

I’m lucky to have the Ghent frame. I wish I could find the postcard I had.

That's cool, looks like it's still on good shape.
I wonder if a private person owns it now and uses it to store their fire truck collection. It would be neat to get a bunch of VWs and have a display weekend inside... if possible _________________ How to Post Photos

If you look there is a fire station to the right. You can see the tower says Salinas Frie. So I imagine the city owns it. The building hasn’t changed much over the years. I think they sold Mazda’s later on.
