can you take corners faster or slower?

The car is more stable with the wider track and longer wheel base. Bajas are not meant to corner fast though... but I do feel it goes around a corner faster. The body roll is pretty big though. _________________ "It's not complicated, it's just expensive!"

The more travel you have in your shocks, the slower you will probably take a corner, or at least more body roll will result from longer travel shocks, unless you have some stiff shocks.
Off road driving is better IMHO with 3x3'sand 6in wider beam, i got to drive my buddies baja, it was awesome!!!! _________________ 1971 Baja Bug

is there a way to lower down the front and rear while using 3x3 and 6in over beam? like with really stiff shocks? I'm trying to come up with an easy way to use a baja for street and have it preform well.
like with slicks and hugely wide. |

I saw a rock crawler that was able to adjust its suspension height by using a winch. There was one in the front and one at the back of the vehicle. The cable attached to the back of the roll cage, and the front winch connected to the front of roll cage. When he turned the winch on, he could pull down onthe roll cage and thus pull the suspension down. Or he would run the winch the other way to loosen up the suspension. I don't know the advantage he had while doing this with rock crawling, but its an idea you could research. Pretty slick to watch it work, kind of like a cheap air ride/hydraulic setup without the hydraulics or air ride!!!! _________________ 1971 Baja Bug

Purpose of those winches is only to suck up the suspension to lift the tires if the rig high centers. Stack some rocks under the wheels, and let it back down. _________________ Les

If you're trying to build a road racer wannabe, the offroad forum is probably not the right place to ask handling questions for pavement. However, Skidmark and I and some others on here are road racers as well as offroaders.
I would suggest setting up the coilovers pretty stiff and adding sway bars. It will have to be a custom deal, but maybe you can find sway bars made for something else which you can make work for you. If you get serious with it, the combo-link spindles for short course offroad racing have negative camber for better cornering. Desert guys run theior spindles straight up at zero camber to avoid making the car dart different directions when hitting irregular bumps. _________________ Richard

For sway bars, your best bet might be to use these:
http://www.stockcarproducts.com/susp21.htm
And these:
http://www.stockcarproducts.com/susp22.htm
And make your own tubular housing. Not sure how you'd design it with adequate ground clearance (if you plan on going offroad), but we've used these on some ITA (SCCA) and PTE (NASA) road race production cars. Best thing was the adjustability of the arms, as well as lots of different spring rates for easy adjustment. |

My rail will out handle any car I've ever had. I love giving the steering brake a little tug as I initiate a turn to get it to slide a bit and then get full in the gas to have it straighten up. Helps that I have the 2.3L for the grunt to get in the gas. |

what does that have to do with his question?
if you have the right shocks, 3x3 arms and 6 inch over beam will corner amazing. i have that setup with fox 12 inch smoothies and can corner awsome. forget sway bars and the other crap. |

Don't forget, how high up the roll center is has allot to do with it. Depending on how you mount something such as a spare and a fuel cell can make a big difference in cornering. The 3x3 with a 6" beam will lower the roll center of a rail or baja which makes for a better cornering vehicle with less body roll. _________________ Chris
