Here's a way to turn regular knobs into slotted radio stem knobs. This is '67 style but any threaded earlier style will work also.

I used an aluminum corrugated roofing nail and hammered a section flat.

Cut it off at the desired lengths. I used these dimensions. A little filing is necessary to narrow the smashed part.

Turn a drill inside by hand all the way up to clear away the threads. This one is 11/64" but 3/16" is better.

Push the new little part into the knob with the key part toward the radio.

Here's the idea.

On aftermarket stereos the knob has to stick up a tad to clear the push-for-balance mode.

The tuning knob has to get a deeper recess so make the key part accordingly.

Then push it all the way on...ready to rock or rap.

The aluminum nail is super easy to work with and I think it will last a long time.

Sweet.
A dab of superglue on the nail would probably help with durability.

The volume one got knocked off and rolled away in a parking lot when I wasn't looking. Good thing TheSamba is still here; now I can make a new one and glue it on this time.
