|
|
This weekend I traded my black 1962 ragtop for a blue 1959 ragtop. Another Samba member had been bugging me about buying my '62 and when the '59 popped up for sale I jokingly suggested trading if he bought the blue one. Well he went for it!
The car had been advertised as having extremely low mileage. Yet I knew it couldn't be true. And it wasn't But that was okay being as the rest of the car was what I expected. Very og and correct with only a few things having been done to it over the last 49 yrs. Still 6v, original 36hp that fires up with a turn of the key, one repaint, heater, cable choke everything is there and works. Plans call for a teardown and cleaning of interior and exterior. I plan to keep the car "stock" for the most part, but a narrowed beam and lowering are a requirement! I'll post pics as things progress.
Black & Blue, a trade is made!
Started to pour when I went to unload it
rust on front of hood.
original interior, seats have seen better days!
The dash should polish up nicely!
luggage area
36 ponies of pure power. Will be detailed and converted to 12v with "small" generator
Ya gotta love untouched wires!
23,000 original miles!?! I don't think so
Pans only have slight surface rust, and plenty of shiny black paint!
I was really happy to see this!
Last yr I asked my daughter what she wanted. She said "a blue ragtop". If she keeps up the good work, she'll be driving this car to school @ 2 yrs.
I'll be converting it to 12v since I have the correct generator to do it with. Plus I have to have the front hood repaired where it has some bad rust. The rear apron has some bad spots that I will have to deal with down the road, but first things first! _________________ 1970 Lotus White Panel

I wish that was so, but I have my doubts. Some of the "documentation" that came with the car leads me to think this. On March 10th 1993 the owner had to have the tranny rebuilt at 00880. Why at rebuild at only 880 miles? And only that many miles in a 34 yr period, then another 22,120 in the last 15? _________________ 1970 Lotus White Panel

What condition are the striker plates in? That is always my first check for low mileage. _________________ 58 Coral Red ragtop(Diana's car)

Clean car really! Rear apron has been replaced at some point though, a 59 would still have an H patern. Pan looks real solid. _________________ Pres. Rivercity VW Club www.rcvwclub.org

I'm starting to get little wafts of bus stink coming from the north. Something about the unique scent of drivers seat padding when it's glued together with mouse piss and shit that really gets me going... and I'm smelling it! Oh yeah! Time to start loading up the equipment. |

Thats the most solid virgin bug I have ever seen.
A roaring tranny could happen the day a car is bought new.
striker plate wear/pedal pad wear/T/S switch wear/front beam ends road grime accumulation and the overall feel of the car is what I tend to go by,
if documentation isnt present.
If your title says the right mileage I would go with it.
sometimes you get tired of a car when you dont have anything left to work on on it.
sending a nice car on down the road and starting on an earlier more valuable ride is the zenith of this hobby. _________________ Happyasshell

Trust me I didn't trade down. I may have taken a step back as far as going from a driver to nondriver. But in overall condition I took a leap forwards! _________________ 1970 Lotus White Panel

Wrong rear apron.. No H pattern.
I would have kept the black rag.. All you needed to do was drop the black rag on some earlies and it would of been tight.. _________________ 59 Ragtop

It was a good deal on both ends. I sold my 67s and was looking for a rag that I wouldnt have to do much work on. The black 62 is a very pretty car and is already done. The 59 was very original. If I was out to keep one for a long time the 59 would have been a better start point for sure. Its much more solid and its a keeper over the long run, Sloan knows what he got. The 62 has some crusty spots. The 59 is one of the better years in my opinion, ice pick door handles and early steering wheel and tail lights. Because I move around I always keep resale value in mind and the 62 fits the bill. I can enjoy it with my family while Im here and sell it when I move again and get most of the dough back vice spending my time wrenching on one. Stock original cars are great but not for me and I dont have the time to do them like they need to be-slammed. It was cool meeting all the FL folks. _________________ Der Schmutzige Süden.

Damn nice Double Cab.......That was a local car here in B-Town. If I needed a 4th project and had some extra scratch I would have bought it. Nice car! I am all about the trades!!! _________________ Paulie
