I thought I would share with you a couple of jobs I did on my Westy a little while back. The first job was due to advice given on here when I raised my front suspension and I now have wishbone spacers fitted and doing well. The second thing was to fit some rear shock extenders to help the van not to top out if it was ever empty. This is a new product available in the UK...
Remember as always we are not pro's and we are just having ago on our own vans because we are average Joe's, and if you know a better way to do anything feel free to stick to what you know
Here is a video of what went on, http://campervanculture.com/2011/06/fitting-rear-s...ia-syncro/

Nice video. Well done, idiot proof and a great soundtrack. Thanks for sharing. _________________ “May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.” - Edward Abbey

Another fantastic piece, Jed.
Wondering about that rear shock extension. It doesn't to add to the wheel travel at all, does it? More like a 'shock mount relocator' than an extension.

I want some of those rear extenders NOW! |
Why? Do you have a syncro with a tall lift? |

The extenders from www.futbus.com are for raised vans, it relocates your rear shock mounting point so you can still use standard shocks. I know he will ship to the US/Canada etc so if you send him an email I guess he should get you a price.
Futbus is a small family run outfit who have spent a great deal of time developing upgrades for bus's over the years and showing what they do for someone to copy directly wasnt my intension. He has already had some cases of people ripping off his ideas in the UK but it ended up doing him a favour in the end because some of the stuff that was copied was rubbish
Glad you all like the video, it keeps us going at it

Those are designed to work with a longer shock giving more articulation. That is more important for actual use than the extenders- which are a way to bypass getting longer shocks and still lift it. |

Thanks as always Jed. Now back to the intent of this thread -- the shock knock...
when i go over a speed bump/hump a little too quick the down stroke is quite harsh and i'm assuming this is what you're calling shock knock. this is the shock topping out or fully extended? seems kind of obvious now that i'm writing. this happens in the front and rear with GW 2" springs/OME shocks.
so upper ball joint spacers and rear extenders would help this issue? thanks for any comments. _________________ '87 subaru westy syncro

Wouldn't a longer travel shock fix the "problem" better? _________________ -89 GL Westy, SVX.. finally.

Jed, another great installment of camper-van culture. I really enjoy the short and informative vids, please keep them coming.
For those needing a longer shock (I wouldn't recommend it if it's not necessary as there's no real benefit) I took this simple design from one of Eric D's old posts when my Konis proved too short for the GW springs. In this case, I didn't want to change an already awesome damper. Very simple if you can source a set of old shocks and have a friend who can bend and weld. Did a set for the fronts too.

yes. The problem is finding one that fits the size requirements with the correct valving. The burley adapter linked above helps in that a longer travel shock that is known to work can be fitted. |

Interesting.
Burley used his shock bracket adapter on the 16" arms he built for me.. (A cut down version) so I have one added length option...
Shock travel has not been an issue for me at ~18" fender lip to hub center.
and my current shocks work.
Nice to know the options.
So... What is the ride height zone where an extender/adapter is needed?
r39o,
What is your ride height that you want/need adapters?
Jed,
Thanks for the post.. Love your videos. Great stuff. _________________ -89 GL Westy, SVX.. finally.
