Indeed,
This plastic is so bad; One I had replaced did not last much.
A next project is to improve them with steel backing. _________________ Stock 1974 US Westy, AW-A 1800cc dual carbs. Twin Falls is my favorite site on the Churchill river in Manitoba. |

The originals are decades old. The repros don't have any UV inhibitors in the plastic so the light kills them quickly.
I had the same problem with my Hagus mirrors. The metal body and mirror glass are fine, but the plastic that connects them together was killed by the sun and the glass fell out. I put it back with double-stick foam tape and filled the gap with hot-melt glue. Not perfect, but at least the glass doesn't fall out. |

I agree with the seatbelt holders. I have one replaced with a metal piece which should outlast the bus. Also the plastic cabinet drawer pulls/latches. Someone always pulls harder rather than pushing the button and then rips the things right off the screws holding them on. All else seems to wear out rather than break. _________________ The Bus came by and I got on, that's where it all began! |

Clutch cables, Clutch cables, Clutch cables,Clutch cables,Clutch cables, and muffler. I finally figured out that my clutch cable tube was bent and was hanging up the cable and causing the problem. So check your clutch cable tube for kinks and such. And lot of lube on it as well as you clevis pin. |

Please don't call me a clevis pin. It hurts my feelings. |

once I broke the pulley on the generator on a 1600 going uphill in a split bus. The belt was too small, too tight, and the pulley split and looked like pac man....some crazy stuff right there, Happened in Morgantown West Virginia if anyone would care. |

the #|~% plastic piece on the end of the solenoid you hook the hot wires to will snap off if you're not careful!
eh, remembering when you could just buy another solenoid and replace it.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the fuel gauge. Those things never seem to work. Maybe it's just a late bus thing, though. _________________ '78 Landmark Conversion/Westy "Buster" |

if you are looking at an old bus, suspect the following:
ball joints
transmission
booster
steering box
signals
rotor and drum thicknesses
hydraulics
the entire engine
battery
as far as common on-the-road failures i have suffered in order of frequency:
more than once:
lighting
cables
fuel pump
generator
flat tire
fan belt
frozen gas line
starter
only once:
broken gen. pulley
points
cutoff jet wiring
plug blew out of head
release bearing blew up, ate the cross shaft and plate
fuel filter obstruction
needle valve obstruction |

clutch cable, throttle cable, pilot bearing. All that has gone wrong in the 4 years I've owned my 71 westy except for the brake servo. _________________ 1971 Westy stock, 2006 Corolla stock, 1969 transporter waiting for engine install

this is the one that i had to pay big for. i was in Atlanta when it blew, and i had to drive all the way back to NY without a clutch. (Atlanta seems to have no foreign part stores) figured it might not go too bad till i got to the traffic jam- on the interstate! WTF? i just went around everyone, leaving the road surface, pissin everyone off for cheatin.
now, i wont drive more than 100 miles out of town with out the plate, shaft and bearing. release bearings are not reliable- no warning!
i would also recommend you carry an OG ignition switch, coil, cutoff jet, headlight switch, and flasher relay. |

Seat belt hanger clips - always carry an extra for passenger side - my friends have no idea how this system works and just pull the belt.
Clutch cable
Vacuum lines - carry a bit of all sizes (look at ratwell's website for sizes) they crack easily and make the bus run like shite
Horn - wiring sucks and is prone to break
Fuel lines - don't last long - get the good ones _________________ Fear is the mind killer.

in my 4 years the throttle cable has broke, the fitting on the carb broke off causing a small fire, ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, that's really it.
oh, my transmission lost 4th gear coming back home on a 250 mile trip i was about 150 from the house and just held it in gear...scared the crap out of me everytime i forgot and took my hand off the stick
that's all i've had problems with and i'm rough on my bus too _________________ proud owner of a defunct 1979 sunroof kombi
